Ok, I am certain that someone has asked this very question before, but I can't find it.
We are pretty lucky with DS... he is 3 months old, and for the most part, sleeps through the night (for now!), getting up once or (rarely) twice to eat. No big deal.
My problem, then? Our bed is a pillowtop, and DH and I are both chunky... so there is a definite dip in the mattress. Yeah, not so safe. So we sidecarred a crib... which would be awesomely amazing and wonderful, except that the only place DS wants to be is in that horrible crack between the bed mattress and the crib mattress (aka, as close to me as possible). I stuffed a rolled up towel in there, but no matter what I do, there is a dip. He is also a snuggler - it is tough to get him to sleep without someone right there... we generally just roll/sneak away when he is asleep.
DS is just to that age where he is not quite rolling over, but he can inch-worm scoot like a champ. Last night, he was in his crib and I was sitting at the computer 20 feet away listening for him (he is always up and down for the first 30-45 minutes or so at bedtime)... I heard him make a noise and went in: There he is, fully on his FACE in the crack. Cue heart attack! He was sleeping on his side, and I figured he just rolled into the crack accidentally.
Ok, live and learn, right? I put him mostly on his back for the rest of the night, in the middle of the crib mattress, and leave my arm there leaning up against him so he can't roll onto his face... but what happens? That's right. I wake up at 3am and my baby is face down in the crack again. Thank heavens for that crazy mom's intuition, because he didn't make a peep.
This is not good. Buying a new bed mattress is not an option. I feel like the only safe thing to do is to put the side back on the crib and leave it right next to our bed. We tried the bassinet/cosleeper option, and DS will not have it. I don't think the mattress is comfortable in his bassinet. Not to mention the fact that he really does not sleep well for the second half of the night (in particular) unless he is in full body contact with me.
How do I get my kid to sleep in his crib without being snuggled? I have no idea how "normal" people put their kids down in the crib and have them sleep? Is there some other option I am not thinking of?
