a really cool idea for dividing workspace

I saw this idea in an older Family Fun Magazine while I was at the doctor's office today. That magazine is totally my guilty pleasure: I don't think I'd ever subscribe to it, but every time I read it at the doctor's I love it. But I digress.

It's using those cardboard display boards (the kind kids use for their science fair project?) as individual study carrels. As soon as I saw it, I thought it was such a good idea for homeschoolers without a lot of space for desk work. The kid can keep all his supplies organized and at hand, and it will cut down on distractions. Plus sooo easy to put away at the end of the day! At the bottom of the page there's a photo someone submitted and it kind of makes me want to make one for myself.

Huh. I wonder if dd would get into that. She would probably just like it for the hanging stuff up and putting stuff inside little boxes aspect. I am going to keep thinking about this---maybe really cool to have a few for subjects that you plan on working on for a longer period of time, like have a geography station or life cycles or something you planned to spend quite a chunk of time on.

Neat idea. When writing, my older ds doesn't like anyone else to be in "his space." This might be a good way to give him a sense of really having his own space - and a barrier that younger ds can understand. Thanks for sharing!

Craft Media Hero, the idea of using different ones for different subjects is a really good one! I hadn't thought of that. It's not like these boards are very expensive or take much room to store.

I made something very similar for CherryPie. I've always heard it being called a "mini office". Some things I put in hers are:

* the 50 states and their postal abbreviations
* a list and pictures of all of our presidents
* days of the week
* months and their abbreviations and number of the month (May - 5)
* a small calendar
* a multiplication table
* a list of Roman numerals
* math symbols and their meanings
* a list of punctuation and when you should use them
* vowels


I'm also planning on making one for KiwiBoy, but haven't gotten around to it yet. His will contain different things since he is only 8. Some things I plan on including in his are:

* an analog clock with move-able hands
* a left hand and a right hand glued in their respective places
* the alphabet
* a hundreds board
* money and their value
* probably some other things, but haven't decided yet


We love mini offices! And I know that some people have them for different subjects, but I didn't want to do it that way.
