Make your own waterproof mattress cover?

I need to get a waterproof cover for the baby's mattress. I found one made of PUL, on sale, but too big. I figured I could cut it to the right size and make it myself? Or just buy PUL fabric and make my own? I'm in the UK though and PUL isn't cheap, this on sale cover would be cheaper. Any ideas or tips?

What size do you need? I found mothercare had the biggest range of sizes for fitted ones. That said we bought the pad (they have a non PVC one) and have used it in a cot and now on DDs bed. It seems to stay put pretty well and is less bulky than a full sized sheet when we need to wash it.

I was planning to make a couple by sewing a pul backing onto a towel but I found it was cheeper to buy them ready made than to buy the pul.

I hadn't though of a shower curtain, I will have to look into that. We need a couple more since DS is likely to be coming out of night time nappies soon
