X-posted in Pregnancy

I'm currently 20weeks and a day. So far, I haven't seen any doctors. Due to certain insurance issues, I don't know if I'm going to be approved for maternity coverage until next month, yada yada yada.

Now, I know I will at least get some checkups from a 'pregnancy specialist' be that midwife or OB. My last birth was a c/s, and that does increase my risk a bit. I also had late term pre-e with my last pregnancy, which also needs a bit more monitoring this time around. Still haven't decided on homebirth though, mostly because the people I'm living with are NOT keen on it at all, and I don't want a stressful birth situation.

However, going the 20 weeks without 'checking in' has been amazingly freeing for me. My first pregnancy was back & forth to the doctors, being poked and prodded and eventually losing Joseph at 16 weeks due to premature labor that they wouldn't stop.

With ds2 it was constant surveillance since they didn't (and still don't) know why I lost Joseph. Constant stress. On bedrest, off bedrest. Being yelled at because I was overweight and gaining weight too fast, when in fact they were weighing me on 3 wildly different scales. My OB at least was reasonable when I explained how much weight I was gaining according to my home scale. But still only 'officially' used the varying office scales. Constant re-testing for diabetes (never got close). I won't even go into the labor/birth aspect.

And now, I'm actually enjoying pregnancy. Yes, I have the normal fears of a woman who's lost a baby before, but in some ways NOT having access to a doctor is forcing me to be calmer. I like this new feeling. However, I know that with my two previous risk factors, I need to be monitoring at least something.

My sister is a nurse and can do daily BP checks for me. Is there anything else I should do to monitor myself? I'm good at palpating my fundus (see previous thread about measuring ahead), so I can keep track of that. With a previous c/s, is there any other specific monitoring I need to do?

I don't know if me being half way through is making me antsy, but I don't feel like my 'blissful ignorance' phase is going to hold out much longer. I want this baby to be okay, for me to be okay. And even though all the measurements in the world won't guarantee that, I know that it might show that something is 'off' and needs more looking at, kwim?

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Reducing your stress may be the most important thing you could do to lower your risk for pre-e, so I wouldn't underestimate the power of UP. Have you read "Pre-Natal Parenting"? Your risk of rupture from a previous CS is extremely low. I would suggest checking out the ICAN site for more info to alleviate your fears. ((Hugs))

I have not seen any "pregnancy professionals" either and am 20+4. The only additional things I am doing is weekly urinalysis (about $50 on amazon.com for a pack of 100), and keeping track of my diet with a nutrition calculator (I'm not taking prenatals because I dont want all the fillers, but want to make sure I'm getting enough vitamins and minerals - which is turning out to be pretty challenging!). DH and I exercise about 3-4 days/week, measure my fundus and take blood pressure on a weekly basis. As I get further along, I do plan to have massages and see a chiropractor.

I did end up with a couple weeks of stress caused by my mom when she found out we were UPing, but aside from that, I've been nearly stress free! Once in a while I consider seeing a doctor or something, but then I read posts where women are completely stressed out over blood work or ultrasounds, or just awful prenatal visits in general, and realize I dont want that! I read "Why Zebra's Don't Get Ulcers" in college, and stress plays a major role in our health... no way do I want to go through all that stress!

Good luck in your deceisions! Try to find some people who will support you no matter the deceision you make.

I totally agree about the stress. My entire pregnancy with ds2 was stress, so I wasn't surprised when I got really mild pre-e at 37 weeks (bp was 140/90, and protein was 500 with the cut off being 300).

I haven't read that book, I will check it out. I'm not worried about rupture at all. First, I'm sure I will feel the pain of it if it happens while I'm growing, and while in labor. It's not like having a doctor will prevent a rupture either, kwim?

So that's what those strips are called! Thanks.

I'm thinking of getting some but I'm a bit jaded. I never had a protein or sugar spike on any of mine. Apparently hydration affects those tests a lot. When do you test to get the most 'accurate' result?

I'm wondering if my 'need' to do a lot of monitoring is to protect myself and my baby from coming under scrutiny by others. I mean, if I'm recording daily bp, checking blood sugars, doing the urinalysis, charting weight, I look proactive. Versus not having anything and being lumped in with the 'crazy' women who are either mentally unstable or on drugs, kwim? I am a bit worried about bp due to the previous pre-e, but the others? Nope.

I'm pretty sure I will labor at home (barring pre-e), but I will give birth in a hospital, simply because the atmosphere where I live would NOT be happy with me birthing at home. And a hospital is literally 2 blocks away, so I can't use the 'I just didn't make it' excuse, kwim?

Thanks for your help!
Off to check Amazon.

I didn't do any prenatal care with any "professionals." I saw a HB midwife twice before I decided to have a UC, but she didn't even listen to the baby. We just chatted. I didn't hear a heartbeat til I was around 22 weeks and picked it up with a fetoscope. If you feel you need to see someone, go for it, but you definitely don't have to. I thought it was awesome just taking care of myself and not having to deal with any stress.
