What do you think of these boys names. One is a top contender but I am still considering other names.

Lowell
Lyle
Baxter
Wendell

Louis - great name, but 50% of people will mispronounce it
Lowell - ouch: he *will* get picked on
Lyle - classic
Baxter - a little dog-ish
Wendell - dunno
Alden - original!
Stanley - classic, but people will nick to Stan, so if that's something you don't want, re-think.

I love Lyle, Alden and Lowell.

Baxter is nice but not my style.

Wendall seems outdated. As does Stanley.

Louis is great name, too.

I love them... except when I hear Lyle all I can think of is Ursula's skeezy fiance in the George of the Jungle movie!! I like Alden, Lowell and Stanley best.

Louis - people will be unsure whether to pronounce it lou-is or lou-ee
Baxter - a dog name
Wendell - sounds like a car dealership
Alden - sounds like a tree

I love Alden! It must be the tree connection. I've seen it spelled Aldon, too.

I like Alden, and Lowell (if you pronounce it like 'joel', I used to know a Lowell and always loved the name)

Alden is my current favourite boy name!

I can't use it because the son of a close friend of mine is named Auden and he is my DS's best friend (if they can have best friends at 18 mos!). Our families are likely to be tight for a very long time and the names are just too close. I hope you use it!

I had a great-uncle named Stanley. Everyone called him Stosh, and I always loved that.

Louis: I don't think it will get mispronounced. It's a great name.

Lowell: I really like this one. It's familiar but rare, old-sounding but cool.

Lyle: I love this name! (But I love Lyle Lovett, too). Strong, beautiful name.

Baxter: Don't care for this one as much. Seems more like a dog's name.

Wendell: Good, but not a favorite. Reminds me of Truman Capote, for some reason...probably from "Dill" in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Alden: Very lovely name, but awfully close to "Aiden" and all it's cousins.

Stanley: I actually like this, though it does have a little bit of a nerd factor. "Stan" is a strong nickname.

i LOVE Lyle and Alden! I am currently strongly leaning toward Lyle myself. (Alden is a former friend's brother's name, and i have too-strong associations with it)

I have also seen Lyle spelled Lyell, though that way it kind of reminds me of a combo of Lysol and Prell....

I vote Lyle!

How in the world would you mispronounce Louis? How else would you spell that name? Strange. If you get people mispronouncing a classic name like Louis, what in the world do we have left to name our children that is safe of this dreaded situation? Anyway, who cares? If you were actually spelling it wrong, okay, but sheesh. Not really your fault if people can't read, right?

Anyhow, sorry for that mini rant. Louis is a great name. My favorite from your list is Lyle. I also like Alden/Aldon okay. I didn't like it at first, but I'm liking it more and more as I read this thread.

I'm not crazy about Lowell. Not sure why
I agree that Baxter is probably more well known as a dogs name.
Wendell isn't bad at all, but it seems feminine to me. If you're okay with that, then I think it's a fine name.
I can't really comment on Stanley because it's my dads name, so it seems outdated to me. The name is quite popular in his age group, and I think it might be a little too soon for a come back. I can see this name coming back into popularity in one more generation.

Thanks for your thoughts. I got these from the ssa lists from the 1890 and early 1900s. I like classic names. I have been leaning towards Louis and I am not too worried about the spelling or pronounciation. I don't think it is too difficult. I do really love Lyle, Lowell and Alden. I just worried that Alden sounded too much like all the "aidan names out there and I definately not going for that. I like Stanley but I don't like Stan at all so I don't think I'll use that. I was wondering if Lyle and Loweel sounded maculine enough or something they would get made fun of for but I really like them.

Some pronounce it lew-iss, others pronounce it lou-ee. It varies on location - both in the US and around the world.

I see. I guess I always thought Loo-ee was a nick name for Loo-iss. And I suppose you could spell it Lewis, but I thought that was a variation on the correct spelling which is Louis. I like the look of Louis much better, and I honestly think (at least in my area) 95% of people will pronounce it Loo-iss.

Louis is the more common and traditional spelling of the name. There was a Louis in my class and he never had anyone spell or pronounce it wrong. I think in most places it is more common for it to be pronounce Lou is and Lou ee is used as a possible nickname. It not like it is a made up spelling or something you never see.

Louis and Baxter are by far my favorites. You have a lot of nice choices on there!
