Kids sleeping on another floor

This isn't really an issue for us at the moment as we still co-sleep, but we just bought a new townhouse and the master bedroom is on the third floor. The second floor is where the two kids rooms are. My kids are 3 and nearly 5 and I'm not entirely sure I'm comfortable with them on another floor from us, but on the other hand, my partner and I are looking forward to having our bed back someday in the near future. At what age would you be comfortable with kids sleeping on another floor?

My older two are on another floor but they are upstairs, we are downstairs. They were nearly 3 and 5 when we bought this house but I am sure there was a transition period I am blocking out. My 7 yo and younger 2 are still downstairs with us. I would have felt differently about the kids being closer to the doors than I am so the situation is a little different.

Thanks mommajb. So would your concern have been break in or escape? My biggest concern I suppose is them running amok in the kitchen. We will have a security system in place as well.

Break-ins aren't really the worry. I have two escapees, one of which likes to cook. 11 yo escapee is is often belligerent and 4 yo escapee is always lots of fun. There is no telling what a teenage escapee could do...

One morning I was standing at the kitchen sink watching the flowers on my neighbors porch. They were moving in such an odd way I called dh over to look. As it turns out it was my daughter in a tye-die diaper asking for cookies and doing a cute little dance. Now I wear glasses when I do dishes and a more through bed check when I get up in the morning.

At our old house, our boys were on the 1st floor and we were in the basement. They were 2.5 and 5.5 when we moved in and were fine. I'd like to have them on a different floor now but we only have 1 floor in our apartment.

What about using one room as a kid's sleeping room, the other as your bedroom and the master as a playroom? Then as the kids grow to want their own spaces, you guys could move to the master.

In our last house we had one bedroom upstairs and one down. It was fine having the boys on the other floor as soon as they were old enough to sleep in a different room...
