Fourth Grade Social Studies/History

Please forgive me if this is a repeat topic--I did do a search but didn't find much. I have two girls --in the fall, one will be entering kindy and the other fourth. I had planned on using Story of the World for both girls, and having the older girl do the workbook, but now I'm worrying that it will be too young for my older dd. I haven't really heard or found anything that is particularly popular. I was wondering if there is anything with History/Geography and Social Studies all combined. We are Christian, but secular is fine/probably preferred.

I also wanted to see if anybody know of any good places for beginning state history (specifically Texas). In the past, I have always just pieced our curriculum together from internet sources and the library, but I just need something very simple for my end this year.

I am doing state history next year. I haven't found any great resources yet, but I am in WA state. I expect the library to be helpful. I will make sure that she knows state geography as well, so I might start with that. I know I want basic history, current geography, past and present notable people, and some fun facts. I don't expect to find a curriculum.

Why do you feel SOTW is too young for your 4th grade dd? She can read the book herself & the activites are spot on imho for that age. I think it's the perfect age personally (even if it's off the WTM path). My experience with SOTW is that it can be too much for a kindergartener honestly. We tried when my daughter was younger & had to put it away. I plan to incorporate it with my kids next year though. They'll be 9 & 6 1/2 when we start it. Anyway. That's my 2cents.

The only reason I thought it was too young for her was b/c everyone I have met who has used it, and lots of people on message boards using it all seen have kids who are younger. I haven't even seen the activity book yet.

I was just trying to figure our one subject for the kids that I could do together. My younger dd will be 6 in November, and is pretty mature for her age so I guess we can try it.
