nak. actually, if mom has high enough vit d levels then an ebf baby can get enough vit d from mom alone. there have been some good randomized controlled trials showing this. the moms were taking the vit d - 4000-8000 iu/day i think.

Just thought I'd add an interesting side note: my ped only prescribes the drops for city-living babies, like mine. And it is true as my friend goes there also and she lives in the suburbs and he did not scribe her any.

Thanks for all the interesting info! I'd been giving the drops to my little guy as his ped is pretty low-key and I figured if he suggested them then I guess I'd do them. Good to know he was right!

RDA for vit D is currently at 400. Unless a mom is taking high dose vit D supplements, she is not getting 4,000 - 8,000 / day.

I frequently supplement with 5,000 / day and am still under the 50 minimum mark.

I give 400 UI to my baby every day starting at 3 months. I also make sure she gets some sun when the sun is out and it's reasonably warm.

Blood tests are the only way to make sure you are sufficient in Vit D.

You can overdose on it, but not likely as we are all mostly deficient.

I personally wouldn't take over 10,000 / day unless monitored every other month with blood tests.

Vit D is crucial for so many body functions. With the media and doctors scaring people out of the sun and into using sunscreen, I am sure vit D deficiency has sky rocketed.

I used them once and I must of squirted it down the wrong hole because she started choking. Never again...lol.

I live in Northwestern Ontario where it's recommended but the kids were fine without it.

It's not really that high of a dose for the mother to make the breastmilk have sufficient levels. I posted in the other Vit D thread but I wanted to post here too so that you can read at least this article
http://www.direct-ms.org/pdf/VitDGen...level%2007.pdf
I take 6500 iu's a day.

Thanks for the reminder, I've been slacking on my vitamin D for myself. I was told that as long I was taking 4000 IU dd should be getting enough.
