Info I can take to the ER (if ever needed) - Page 2

As an ER nurse, part of our history on children includes the question, "Is the child up to date on vaccinations?" It's a yes/no answer, and we move right on. It's never been a source of discussion for me.

If your child is in for a cut, puncture wound, abcess, etc , tetanus may be offered, but all you have to do is say, "no thanks". I've never heard of any issue in my own ER -- in other words, no nurses or docs arguing or pushing vaccines. The only one we give is tetanus, and a patient always has a legal right to refuse.

The more you "discuss" the longer everything will take and no one is going to win so I would just say that you are not open to reevaluating your position in the ER -smile- and refuse to discuss it further. TX does have philosophical exemptions.

I took my baby to the ER for a respiratory issue. She caught a cold from her big brother, and her breathing was raspy. I took her after a sleepless night (for Me) listening to her wheezing with every breath. Better safe than sorry, so we went to the hospital.

I was questioned by every nurse and doctor--Is she up to date? Answer--No, we don't vax. Then they'd ask me about her well baby visits.

Answer--We have never been to a well visit. I don't take her to the doctor while she is healthy. That's why we are here at the hospital now, because this is the first time she has Needed a doctor.

They acted like I had 3 heads or something! How can a baby survive for 6 months without ever going to a well baby visit? You crazy woman lol!!

I am not a confrontational person, but it was not that difficult to stand up to the doctors concerning her vax status. Just remember Why you don't vax, and you will find the courage you need when the time comes. You are doing what YOU think is best for YOUR child. Remember, when you leave the hospital, even if you are bullied and humiliated, you have done the right thing for your child. That is all that matters in the long run.
