Well, thanks to my upstairs neighbors/ extraordinary gardening buddies, the 4 tomato plants are all in the ground, with some basil underneath! They also transplanted 4 kale, 2 chard, and 2 snap peas to that spot. This all happened on Sunday and then there was practically a monsoon yesterday, which involved all of us scurrying around trying to catch water in anything we could. The downspout got directed to right where those plants are and I wonder if it was way too much water. This area gets a bit flooded so I am concerned about drainage. Which is why I put the raspberry cane into a self-watering bucket instead of in the ground, but that might have been a FAIL. We never got around to putting an overflow hole into this bucket contraption so I guess it was overly wet... and now there are itty bitty bugs swarming on the soil surface, mostly around the edges. They appear white, way smaller than a grain of rice but about the same proportion as a medium grain, and I'm not sure if they can fly (yet, anyway) but they are definitely jumping around. Um, it's very nasty. So do we have mosquitos breeding there now or... something else?? If I throw on some more mulch will that help or not really? I'd hate to have to dump the whole thing, that's a big chunk of potting mix! Meanwhile the gooseberry bush starter, which had a few nice green leaves when I got it, has lost them. Whoops.
We have enjoyed some tiny radishes and thinnings from the Spinach. The lettuce has gotten a lot thicker and I really need to thin out the mesclun mix & arugula. Maybe some of it would make it thru a transplant?
