Yay! Laid off as of June 1, hugely pregnant now.

Due July 21. I get to apply for law jobs that I probably can't start until fall (unless they want me to start for 3 weeks then leave), now (or, at least, as of June 1), if I want unemployment.

On the upside, I might be able to collect unemployment during what would have been a "maternity leave." (Unpaid. At least we planned for that.)

Sigh. This should be fun.

I'm so sorry - that sucks.

I think that's actually kind of awesome. You pretty much get a partially paid maternity leave, plus a few weeks before the baby is born to rest up and get ready. You may even come out financially ahead.

Well, yes and no. I still have to apply for jobs and "be available" if I want to qualify for unemployment at all. I've got a message in to my law school career services to plan strategy (i.e. when to disclose, and how--yes, it's illegal to refuse to hire someone because they're pregnant, but it's perfectly legal to refuse to hire someone because they're not going to be able to start full-time and uninterrupted until fall).

Still...we're in decent shape financially. I went to law school on a full scholarship and have no debt other than my mortgage. We've got 3-4 months worth of living expenses liquid, and a couple of years' worth we can tap into if absolutely necessary. (My husband is also seeking work--he graduated college in December and has been unable to find employment, and was going to be a SAHD if nothing worked out.) So, no panic, just, well, ugh.
