Would you eat this?

So... we feed the cat raw meat, often beef scraps, cause they are cheap. Frequently, we get a cup+ of pure fat in those meat scraps, which we trim, because the cat can't have that much fat, it makes him sick.

It's conventional beef, probably the cheapest of the cheap, though maybe some good stuff mixed in.

Would you render it and use it? (For context, I don't eat lard, and I don't eat butter and dairy together, so little bits of beef fat, plus poultry fat plus coconut and olive oil are options for meat dishes.)

I'm really really tempted to render it up, save it, and use it to make fried chicken or something which is way too expensive to make with pastured beef fat. It would be healthier than veggie oil, even if not as healthy as pastured... right?

What do you think? would ya use it? or toss it?

I wouldn't. There is more nastiness stored in the fat and because the scraps are from corn-fed cattle, they'll have a bad omega 3 to omega 6 balance. The fat is probably the worst part of conventional beef. In comparison to veggie oil, it's just as bad omega fatty acid-wise and probably worse toxin-wise.

I'd either feed it to the dog or try and make soap from it.

Can't argue the toxins, but in terms of omega 3/6 issues, the ratio may not be great, but the overall amount is lower because the fat, overall, is a lot more saturated. So a couple tablespoons of conventional beef tallow would have less omega-6 than a couple tablespoons of, say, corn oil.

We compromise on meat, right now we buy conventional but I've started buying beef fat and pork fat from a farmer who pastures his animals, and rendering that. But at times, depending on our budget, I've rendered conventionally-raised animal fat. Not great, but, well, it worked in the budget.
