DS, who is almost 4, has been seeing a traditional allergist for food intolerance since he was a toddler. He was diagnosed with a dairy and soy intolerance. His main symptom was diarrhea and an instant diaper rash, it was like the poo burned his bottom immediately after he went, even if I changed it the second he pooed. Once he was toilet trained it was harder to see the difference, and he eventually *seemed* to outgrow the soy allergy, which we were so happy about because it opens up so many foods. He is still off dairy. His paternal grandmother has diagnosed celiac. DH has many food allergies; I think he has celiac or at least a wheat intolerance as well, although the celiac test came back negative.
To me, DS still has symptoms. He has dark circles under his eyes. His eating habits are weird, even for a 4yo. His stools are runny more often than not- they almost never hold their shape when you flush. He complains of stomach ache, and not just at times when he's trying to get out of doing something.
And recently I noticed he has what looks like cradle cap underneath his lovely thick curls. I chalked it up to not washing his hair enough/thoroughly enough (he hates it), so tonight I put lots of shampoo on and really scrubbed. After the bath, it's still there.
My gut feeling (ha) is that he has continued gut problems. My question is, who do I take him to? The allergist is not that helpful...I'm sure he is good with severe allergies, but for something like what's going on with my son, he's just not going to take it seriously. There's a holistic pediatrician nearby. There's a holistic nutritionist nearby too. There are hardcore specialists of every type in NYC, which is reachable but a pain to travel to with my two little ones.
I am so busy right now and am overwhelmed at the thought of taking this on, but the cradle cap was the final straw for me- I really feel he needs some kind of change, and I would like some direction from a specialist. I just don't know who! Any suggestions?
