I don't know if your library has a website, but a lot of times I'll get on ours and type in a subject like, "Native Americans" and then just browse through and see which picture books would be most appropriate. I try and get ones that have a story attached and are not just dry fact books.
which Little House books do you mean?

THis isn't a non-fiction book, but my 4.5 year old is loving it so much and the pictures are so wonderful as is the rhyme that I thought I'd recommend it:

Yeah they tackle a subject through different informational pages with lots of pictures with paragraphs here and there explaining. They work well for us, but then my son loves our insect and bird guides too.

Nursery Tales

I also have a 4 year old son and have found that another great way to do "history" at this age is through nursery tales from around the world. There are several great collections out there:

Nursery Tales Around the World
The Serpent Slayer
Mighter Than the Sword
Asian Children's Favorite Stories
Misoso
The Girl Who Helped Thunder
Grandmother Stories
The Barefoot Book of Brother and Sister Stories
I also like some of Gerald McDermott's trickster tales

Not all of the stories will be appropriate for a 4 year old but you can sift through them. You will learn alittle about the cultures the stories come from and can locate the home country of each story on a map. Plus Nursery Tales are a great way to keep your child's imagination and sense of wonder alive....

HTH!

What a good idea. The grandmothers's stories says it's pretty close to age and it sounds great so I've reserved it at our library.
