Not as expected...

Today was my 22 month old's first overall Evaluation/Diagnosis day- we've already tested his hearing and we still have weird results there, there is some hearing, but what he's processing may not be what he's hearing- at any rate, it was the hearing that really started the journey to today's evaluation.

Gross Motor: 18 months
Receptive speech/language: 8 months
Expressive speech/ language: 6 months
Cognitive: 15 months
Fine Motor: 13-14 months

I suspect that many of the results were skewed because he doesn't speak, but still, he scored lower than I anticipated pretty much across the board.

We only have the preliminary report as of now, the complete report should be done in 4-6 weeks.

I guess it's a jumping off point. I don't see the deficits to be as extreme as they appear in black and white, but maybe I'm missing something. It's a lot to process.

It is a lot of process, and from what I've seen, there's no way to really tell what it means. An eval is just a snap shot in time. It doesn't say what your child is capable of or how they will be doing in a year or two.

I think it's a good sign that the delays don't seem as extreme as they appear in black and white, and that you are doing the right thing by having an eval and letting experts be involved in your child's development.

Can you tell us what the hearing test said? Almost all kids have residual hearing, but a lot can not access speech with that hearing, without amplification. It is very possible that he is hearing lots of sound but not well enough to understand and use speech.

All they could conclusively say was that there was some hearing loss, but I have not gotten the in-depth report back, so I don't have a lot to cite.

I think the E&D team is heading down the AS road, and that's where the main focus is, which leaves me frustrated as I really don't think that's the whole picture. I'm still in 'hurry up and wait' mode until I get a final copy of the reports.

We are starting speech, OT, and PT at this point however, which should give us a little more information.

I don't think I'd be that quick to jump to that conclusion. Hearing loss is a very complex thing, even a mild loss can effect a child in lots of ways, and if there's a conductive component to it, it can effect his gross motor and fine motor skills as well. Of course speech and social skills are effected.

I don't understand why you don't have the report?? We get the audiogram minutes after each hearing test, there's no waiting for reports. And if there's any loss, they should be aiding him!!! Getting him clear access to sounds could make a WORLD of difference.

Test it yourself...put some peroxide in your ears and walk around trying to do things. You can still *hear*, but not clearly. YOu become disoriented, your reactions a little different. Now imagine if that's all you've ever known! It is possible that hearing loss alone causes all the other problems.

I'm not trying to discredit the team, because it is also possible that there is something else going on. But i"m just confused why they aren't focussing more on the hearing loss and getting it corrected...
