Late at night snacks

I hate being hungry during late at night and I have been snacking on granola bars but they end up keeping me awake then I would struggle to go back to sleep.

What are snacks (healthy only) that you would eat that are filling enough and does not keep you awake? I want something that I can keep in my bedroom rather than going downstairs to look in the refrigerator.

nuts! a small handful of macadamia nuts go a long way

I guess the lasagna I ate at 3am last night doesn't count a something you can keep beside you "just in case", but it did put me back sleep quickly.

I've been going for a Larabar and a banana since the second tri. I can usually go right back to sleep after. Maybe the granola bars have too much sugar?

I've been doing apple slices. They don't seem like they are that filling, but I can pop a couple slices in my mouth and fall back to sleep pretty quickly. Last pregnancy I did crackers, but I hated how heavy they were and how they got stuck in my teeth. This time around its apples, they're light, fresh and surprisingly filling.

I usually have a small bowl of low sugar cereal with milk. I think it actually helps to get out of bed to eat. I'm usually able to get back to sleep after.

Yup! Handful of raw almonds does the trick for me.

calcium or protein rich foods have a calming/sedative affect that aid in sleep (hence the warm milk tradition before bed) so cheese sticks, yogurt and nuts are all great.

Thanks for the helpful tips!

I'd definitely avoid cereal with milk before going to bed b/c I usually have the urge to RUN to bathroom to vomit!

I wish I've got a small refrigerator tucked away in my bedroom so I'd be able to snack on cheese sticks and etc.

I'm going to shop for nuts later on today.

Yes, I think the granola bars have too much sugar. Maybe I should make my own granola bar. I'm sure there are plenty of delish sugar free recipes out there.

For some reason, this pregnancy, my stomach is more fussier than previous 2 pregnancy. My stomach gets upset easily with lots of tomato sauces. I love Italian food!

I was warned sternly against cereal for the same reason as the granola bars: the moderate to high glycemic index carbs are similar (they hit fast, and retreat fast, which among other things leaves you feeling hungry).

Protein and fat are your friends. Kashi Chewy bars are lower in carbohydrates with more protein and fat. Ezekiel bread has protein and fiber, and is low glycemic index.

And yeah you totally can't go wrong with the healthier nuts (raw, or at least dry roasted, salt OK but not MSG, anything but peanuts which don't have as healthy a fat in them). I liked raw almond butter by the spoonful because brushing my teeth right after eating nuts was a pain.

I was advised to get more calories during the day but still always got hungry in the night. Whole milk (Horizon Organic, with vegetarian DHA added) was my best friend.

Goodness I need to go eat something before I sleep!
