Dd's getting clipped today

I mentioned I've been struggling with breastfeeding, turns out dd has a lip tie on her upper lip. The thought of the clip hurting her kills me but I've been doing research and not only is it an issue for breastfeeding but it can cause major dental and speech problems. It's best to take care of it now. (did I mention she already has 2 teeth coming in? Yup the little buds before the teeth are in. My ds had 4 when he was born) so we have an appointment at noon to get it clipped. They tell me it's a fast and almost painless snip and that there are no blood vessels so it will hardly bleed. I will insist on a
little spray on numbing medicine. I think it will hurt me more than her. oh and wanna here someothing crazy? I was checking out ds who is 2 and he has the lip tie too! I know we had some nipple confusion issues with breastfeeding him but now I think the tie contributed to it. Thank goodness his teeth are not
crooked but I have noticed a slight lisp which may be on account of that. I'm gonna see if they can snip him too, though I might have to make a seperate
appointment. Snipping ds will be much much harder since they will have to restrain him. Well, updates later.

I was attending my good friend when her daughter was born. She had a great homebirth OB, and dd was born healthy. Interestingly enough, the ob did a tongue/lip tie inspection of the baby right after her birth, and found a tongue tie. He clipped it right then, within 20 minutes of the baby being born. The baby didn't react at all, and as soon as he did it he put the baby to her mom's breast. Breastfeeding went on as normal. It was a quick, relatively painless procedure, if that helps. The OB said he wishes every doctor or midwife would inspect babies for ties...he said it's the cause of a lot of breastfeeding issues, and often goes undetected.

I think you're right about it being harder on Mama than baby.

I think if they will do your son today too, ice cream for big brother AND mama is definitely warranted.

ditto this - i've heard exactly the same thing, that it's painless - midwives used to just slice it with their fingernail. Hope it improves your breastfeeding!

Thanks everyone. I'm glad it's such a minor snip and done quick. I'm surprised how common it is yet you don't really hear about it and theydont catch it while in the hospital.

As a side question... I've found a couple articles (not many) saying there may be a connection to lip and tongue ties and SIDS. Anyone else know about this?since I can't find a lot on it I'm guessing it's just someones theory and not so much fact.

My dd is tongue tied. It was noticed right away at the hospital. The doctor refused to snip it much to the horrors of the LC (she wanted it done and said we'd always have problems with it). Fast forward 3 1/2 years later: we have had no problems with it at all. We breastfed for 3 years and her speech is very clear. On a sidenote: We were told it was genetic so we searched our families. Her grandfather is tongue-tied too.
