Oyster sauce?

It is an ingredient in a recipe I am planning to make this week. I don't have any on hand, nor have I ever used it. What is it like? Can I substitute anything else for it?

Fish sauce would probably be OK, but oyster sauce is worth hunting down. If you have any Asian markets nearby, check them out.

Oyster sauce is YUM. Its pretty salty, other than that I'm not sure how to describe it. We make a delishious steak sauce with it. Our local grocery actually carries it in the Asian food aisle, near the soy sauce, etc.

Yeah, I have seen it at some grocery stores too, but I live in an area with a pretty big East Asian population.

It is definitely available at my store, but I wondered if it was worth taking up more space when I already have fish sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, and a million other Asian condiments. I seriously think oyster sauce is one of the only things I do not have!
