What's this bump??

In the last couple of days, I've noticed a reddish, slightly raised/swollen, slightly tender-to-the-touch bump on my breast -- roughly the diameter of a pencil eraser. It's right at the edge of the areola. It's not a part that my baby has in his mouth while he's nursing (his latch is fine, I've just got huge areolas), which makes me think it's not a bleb/milk blister. I had one plugged duct once, when he was a newborn about 3 months ago, and it looked/felt different and hurt more... so I don't think this is a plugged duct, although maybe? It seems more like a zit, honestly, but without the whitehead. (I also breastfed an earlier baby and never had this.)

It's not really bugging me at this point, but I'm worried that it will get worse. Any ideas?

Is it one of the Montgomery's glands that is just blocked? If you develop other symptoms, it may have become infected.

I would probably start a was moist compress in case it is some sort of skin block or something and keep an eye on it.

Yes! Thanks for that term, "Montgomery's glands"; I googled it and looked at images and I think that's what it is, just a little blocked or something. (I don't have fever or nausea or anything like that, just red and tender right around the area.) Is there common advice re what to do about it? Warm compresses?

I think I'll give my midwife a call tomorrow and check in about it too. Thank you!!

Update?

Have you been able to get any relief? Warm compresses working out?

Thanks for checking in, Liz! I got distracted from this problem by a lovely case of food poisoning over the past couple of days... good times. But yes, the swelling seems to be going down and the soreness is fading. Thank goodness. Thanks for the info!

Glad to hear that one problem is resolved, at the least the second should be resolved shortly.
