Mine needs to be reminded that making sounds like a small wild animal while shaking his head vigourously does not help with the latching on process. And while in the morning it may make Mama laugh, at night it can make her cry.

My daughter was a VERY serious nurser. She latched on and wouldn't come off, even in deep sleep. My son is a little different. He's content to lick dribbles AND I can unlatch him, sometimes even when he is awake. He can sleep without the nipple in his mouth.

Mine too! Or sometimes when we're attempting to nurse at night, I can see that mi nipple is fully in his mouth, all he has to do is shut his mouth and suck, and yet he's still frustrated!! Looking forward to the end of the "cracked nipples, engorged breasts" stage... (but he's worth it!)

But I wish mine wouldn't do that, too. It just feels creepy to me. She licks while she's latched on sometimes.

hahaha! I MISS that stage so badly! I cried everyday while we got the hang of nursing (DD was early) and struggled with an oversupply but seeing her shake her head like a crazy person around my nipple and licking what was streaming out when I let down just from being close to her warmed my heart. Enjoy these days as frustrating as it may be.

I wonder why they are still searching for the nipple even when it's in their mouth? Maybe it's not touching their soft pallet? Or maybe there isn't any milk on the tip of your nipple so they can't taste it yet?

could be. my nipples aren't very long right now, and being engorged didn't help (thankfully past engorgement). Some of the time i think i'm simply misinterpreting his cues (just because he woke up in the middle of the night doesn't mean he wants to nurse).
