I havent been full of pregnancy symptoms (yet, I'm only 5 weeks) but one thing that has changed are my bowel movements. I need some fiber ladies!! lol

Can anyone give me some ideas of high fiber foods? I had a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast.

Thanks!

I have heard flax oil or magnesium are good for constipation issues. 2 doulas told me to try those options.

I have a supplement that is calcium/magnesium....think that would work?

probably not. calcium would tend to slow you down. magnesium citrate or hydroxide gets the trains moving!

other high fibre foods are beans, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereals especially anything with bran in the name. my fav cereal is Corn Bran. it doesn't taste like sticks flax oil is supposed to help but ground flax seed is what contains fibre, so definitely give that a shot!

metamucil is a fibre supplement that is safe for pregnancy if you need a little something to get things going while you figure out what food works for you.

When I was trying to increase my fiber I was told to make berry smoothies with seedy fruits, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries.

That sounds delicious!!! I think I need to buy a bag of frozen fruit! Did you make it with yogurt?

This was weirdly comforting for me. I'm 4.5 weeks along, and no symptoms to speak of. I was worried I should be feeling something already.

I'm glad it comforted you

When I first found out, I was pretty nauseous (some weakness, some dizziness)...I wonder if it was a surge of hcg or something, because in the last week there's pretty much nothing. I'm usually full or starving, and I feel queasy if I get up too early (seriously! lol the baby wants me to sleep in!) and after lunch I get pretty sleepy. But other than that, nothing.

Just wait til about 6 weeks or so....you'll probably get more symptoms between then and about 8 weeks.

Dark, leafy greens always do the job for me. I love kale more than a lot in life but I'm definitely not craving it right now. Might be hard to get down if you're not typically a greens eater and you end up with a healthy dose of m/s like I have right now...UGH!

Dunno, but oats are good for stoppering you up if you have the runs, sooo...

Fresh organic fruits and veggies! Maybe 1/2 wheat bran and 1/2 oats (lowers the glycemic index of the oats too, and rolled oats are high glycemic, believe it or not. Being whole grain doesn't seem to matter much somehow)?

Flaxseed is very high in estrogenic lignans, so as long as that's safe for pregnancy, then it is yummy and nutritious and will definitely get you moving.

Munching organic apples raw and peels on, is a ton of fiber, pectin, a bit of quercitin, some vitamin C, and good potassium.

Best wishes!

oats are good for both constipation (due to insoluble fibre) and diarrhea (due to soluble fibre). i consider them a cure all for that reason different people will react to things differently. the steel cut oats are the best (and low GI too), instant oats aren't as good because they're much more processed.

So I eat a huge bowl of oatmeal every morning to keep me going. If I don't have it, I don't go... Lots of fruits and veggies too. A thing to remember though, is that you can fill up on fiber, but if you're not staying hydrated enough, it'll just block you up more.

I was taking a calcium/mag liquid supplement before I got pregnant and that did make a difference and the amount and um...texture. It wasn't diarrhea. Maybe because it was a liquid supplement?
I actually didn't know about the magnesium until someone told me and I was like AHHH! that's whats doing it.

I have a green smootie for breakfast almost daily. It's got all kinds of fruit in it(really whatever i have on hand) and then a handful of kale or baby spinach with water or juice to thin it out. Even with a bit of m/s it's managable to get down, esp w/ a banana in there! I am pretty regular!
