How to wash mold off wall?

Hello!

We are about to move into a rental house and there is a bit of mold in one of the bedrooms on the wall. The landlords were very up front about it and said that that room doesn't get much of the sunlight or warmth during the day and so can get humid. They have offered to give us their dehumidifier to run in there.

What would anyone recommend for getting the mold off the wall. If doesn't look terribly bad- just a small spot.

We don't plan on having anyone sleeping in that room because of the mold. We are currently in a house that has some damp smells under the sinks in cabinets etc and I think I may have an allergy.

(You may all be thinking....um, why would you move into a house with known mold? Well....we live in New Zealand and I am coming to find that most of the houses have these problems. I am having such bad allergies in this house that I'm willing to go to this house in hopes that it will be better. I don't think there is any sure thing about moving in a rental with no mold) I think we plan on getting some air purifiers as soon as we can afford it.

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas about removing mold from a wall, let me know!

We thought we had mold in our sublevel basement which turned out to be something non toxic (effervescence). However, I still had a reputable agency come in to our house, test it, and tell me what to do. IF it had been mold, I was told that you need to wear one of those surgical masks (covering nose/mouth), open as many windows as you can in the room but keep the door closed to the rest of the house, and use either bleach (or straight vinegar) to scrub it off. Better done by someone who does NOT have current allergies, or is pregnant, nursing, etc. Afterwards, to have it painted over with mold resistant paint. I don't think it is out of the question for you to ask the rental agency to wash it off themselves!--plus painting it with the mold resistant paint. If you've already agreed to do it yourself, then I'd have your husband do it while you all are OUT of the house for the day (the spores become airborn when being cleaned), close the door to the room, keep the windows open. After it dries have him paint it. And yes, definitely run the dehumidifier in the room all day with the door to the room closed, and don't put anything (like dressers, beds, etc) up against the wall. The mold will quickly regrow back if something is up against the wall.

FWIW, I'm no expert!, but I'd think seeing mold with your own eyes in a house you are moving to may not solve anything for you, since if you're having problems now, it doesn't need to be a high amt of mold for you to have a sensitivity to it.

for some reason our bedroom wall where the bed and dresser was against the wall was covered with mold when we had been gone a few days in the fall. we moved the furniture away from the wall and scrubbed it with bleach water. it did not come back.

Just wanted to add that we've gone out and bought a couple of dehumidifiers as it is very wet this time of year in New Zealand. Hopefully that will prevent some future mold issues. I'd also like to get some air purifiers that will suck in the mold spores if there are any in the air....when finances allow
