Not only is there a lot of pressure to put them in school, but what used to be daycare for toddlers has been renamed "school", thus making one look like a bad parent when you take your kids out during the day and the toddlers are "not in school".
Wow, that's not what it's like at all where I am. Everyone here is in preschool, but all the preschools are either MWF or TTh, and kids either go in the morning or the afternoon.

It's expected around here. People don't understand why I don't have DS in preschool. It would be free for us and he'd be bussed back and forth and fed two meals while he's there. Help Me Grow (EI program) comes to the house for DD and they sometimes act concerned, like I don't know I CAN send DS to school. I know it'll only get worse when he's "supposed" to be in K this fall. *sigh* But he's starting to understand the differences in schooling options and just the other day he proudly told someone "I'm doing homeschooling".

Oh and it's worse if you have a special needs kid. People started bugging me about what I was going to do about preschool for DD when she was barely over a year old! We didn't even know (still don't) if she'll even make it to 3, and people are worried about her schooling. I can't even believe people would expect us to send her *anywhere* given her fragile medical condition. But ya know, school is important for socialization and stuff. :-/

yes there is more pressure, especially from friends and dh's family (they are in india though) My family though is more old fashioned in that sense i suppose, they know i am a sahm and don't expect ds to go to school until kindergarten. But i do feel like dh feels that we are kind of out there because we don't send ds to preschool so he always tells people that i do preschool with him at home, he has never gone to any public school in america other than college, so he doesn't realize that all they do in preschool is color, learn letters, numbers and a bit of socializing, i have taught at a daycare and know what it is like, and i know ds is not missing much, ds does go to the gym daycare a few hours a week, that is all the socializing i think he needs at 3. I may put him in a sport in the next few months, still deciding on that one though.
