Favorite sex ed books for the younger crowd?

I am looking for books for kids 10 and under-basic sex ed, body changes and such. Most of the books that I have come across are geared more for kids around 12.

Do you have any favorites?

its perfectly normal was good although a little on the graphic side but geared to ages 8+ they had it at the local library

The authors of "Its Perfectly Normal" have two books for younger kids as well, they are all excellent.

It's Not The Stork--- I would consider this for the pre-school crowd (as in before 1st grade)

It's So Amazing--- Elementary School. Before It's Not The Stork came out, I think the age for this was 5+


It's Perfectly Normal --- says "Ages 10 & Up" on the front cover.

They are done in comic bookish style (not individual cells, but with talk bubbles & everything). This makes them not a great read-aloud, IMO, but they are nice because each page or spread is a different topic so you can choose a topic and go right to it instead of reading the entire book. Some people like the first two but are uncomfortable with "It's Perfectly Normal"'s acceptance of masturbation.

Are you looking for boys or girls? DD really like the American Girl books--- Care & Keeping of You, etc...

Maybe we'll start with the youngest books and work our way up to "It's Perfectly Normal." The girls are 10-I have heard the American Girls books were good-so I will look into that. The girls show no signs of puberty, but ds age 8 is showing early signs. DS, age 5 is obsessed with anatomy of all sorts, he's always into my anatomy books for school so I thought he might be interested in something geared for his age, plus we have another baby on the way.

Has anyone read "My Body Myself for Boys (or girls)" or "What's the Big Secret?"

My five year old really enjoyed "It's Not the Stork."

For the 10 year old girls, I recently just picked up several books from the library and left them out. This is the one DD ended up pouring over in her room:

I just flipped through the American Girls one at Borders the other day and was really impressed. I haven't checked out others (my DD is only 4), but it was really clear and positive. Well, the one I looked at was about girls bodies and puberty, but maybe they have a sex one too?

It's funny, I was confused by the American girl thing because I thought there were dolls called that, and the book looked totally different, so I was wondering what it was...

We started with It's So Amazing when ds was about 7 or 8. I read it to him back then, and we'd talk about stuff. Now that he's 10, he reads it himself. It's great.

We also love the It's Not the Stork series. I read it aloud with my oldest at age 8. It's also a book my younger, non-readers look at from time to time - without gleaning anything they aren't ready for. I'll read it to them when they ask/are ready.

We read Making Animal Babies recently and liked it. Dd is 4 and some of it was over her head as far as biology but it was a good starting point and we just dialogged about the pictures.

We went to breakfast that weekend and she saw a pregnant woman and said "Mom look! She's got the sperm and the egg!"

Subbing for more books. I'd like to have lots of books on the subject for open and continued conversation!

Hands down it would be Boys, Girls and Body Science by Meg Hickling.

I read "It's So Amazing" to my boys last fall, so they were 3.5 and 6.5. I think it would be a good one to own, actually.

They're the same company. They have the historical fiction books, then a lot of "advice" and craft type books as well. We have given several of the "Smart Girl's Guide to Middle School" as gifts this spring.

I picked up both the American Girls book and a DK book called Where Do Babies Come From? at the library. The American Girls book is really good and I will probably purchase it just to have available. The DK book is good for the very young-it introduces the concept of the sperm and egg through pictures of animals and their babies and then shows a picture of a mom and dad and how they also have sperm and eggs. Then there are some pictures of mom with the baby shown in her uterus at different growth stages which could be useful for showing a little one how a baby is growing inside mommy. There isn't an explanation for how the egg and sperm join, which is why it is probably best for the preschool set. Both my 2.5 year old and 5 year old liked it but my 5 year old wants more details.

I have some more on order so I will update when we've read them. Thanks for the suggestions!
