Pooping standing up

I've just in the last week or two started potty training my 23 month old son. He seems to be doing ok on the peeing - I just sit him on the potty every 20 minutes or so and he goes and has very few accidents. He's naked during the day unless we go outside to play and then I put a diaper on him and I also put a diaper on him when he naps and goes to bed at night.

The issue is with pooping. Either he waits until he has a diaper on to poop or if he's naked and needs to, he just poops standing up wherever he happens to be. Unless my eyes are on him 24/7, I don't know how to prevent this as he's not really a loud grunter or anything so I don't know what's going on until it's happening or has happened.

Has anyone else had this problem? My sister's son had this issue and still at 4 years old struggles with it so I'm kinda scared this could be a long term thing....

My 2 year prefers to half squat over his little potty to poop now.

When we first went diaper free (& nakey a lot) He would go to his preferred poop spot and go whether he had something on or not. I had to vigilant in the first couple of weeks and get his potty to him when I saw him going there to poop. Then I would help him sit, verbalize reminders about pooping on the potty etc.

Now we have progressed to me still needing to watch when gets the "I'm going to poop soon" look. Then we take off his undies, & I tell him where his potty is and remind him to poop in it. The potty started in the living room & is now closer to the bathroom. I find he's now starting to develop enough control to walk himself to where the potty is and get it in. For whatever reason, he ends up squatting rather than fully sitting most of the time, unless I physically help him sit fully.

I don't worry about yet, I figure it's one of those things that will develop with reminders & readiness.....but I'd never heard of an older child needing to stand to poop before, so I don't know if it will be an issue for us......
