B.G. Questions....

I use the BG pocket (one size) diapers....we are new to this cloth diaper thing and I LOVE my diapers...just a few little snags that I'm wondering if I can improve on???

I've had a few leaks and I'm wondering if that's just the way of babies or if I am doing something wrong? It's only a few.....by FAR less than I ever had with those horrible disposables I used with my first two!!! so I actually feel wimpy for complaining at all! But anyway, two have been through the leg (one was an explosive bm that was horrendous and may not have been avoidable with ANY diaper!) and the others have been from wet diapers up the back ....I'm wondering if I am stuffing them wrong or maybe he was just wetting extra heavy at the time....I don't recall how long the diaper had been on him....I generally change him every hour to two at the absolute most unless he's sleeping of course....never had a problem at night as I double the inserts....
oh, he's 6 weeks old and I use planet detergent and follow directions ofor washing....first cold, then warm (with 1/4 the recommended detergent) and hang to dry....

SECOND QUESTION: If its' a rainy day and you can't hang to dry, do you air fluff in the dryer or just hang somewhere in the house??

Any thoughts?

I think sometimes if you don't get the leg gusset snug it can leak, If the insert is soaking wet it meant it just couldn't absorb any more but if it is dry it could have a built up of diaper cream if you use it. If you find it is only 1 diaper that is leaking you could put a little dish soap on it and scrub for a few seconds, rinse in the sink and launder as normal.

As far as drying I was naughty and used my drier most of the time. I tried hanging the inserts but I only had 18 diapers and they would take too long to dry. In the summer I would hang the shells and use the drier for the inserts. The drier won't hurt the inserts and I always dried on high heat. Hope that helps.

hmmmm...not sure if it's a particular diaper or not...I'll have to watch...we don't use any creams at all...
I didn't realize the inserts could be put in the dryer! Wow....that certainly saves time since the shells don't take much time to hang dry anyway!
thanks for your thoughts!

Are you using the newborn insert? If so, have you noticed they are soaked after the times the dipe has leaked? If yes, maybe try the bigger insert or double up on the newborn inserts.

To check if the diapers are repelling, just put each one under the faucet (just the shell, no need for the insert), put a little water on and it should soak through - if it beads up or pools, as the PP said, put some dish soap (blue dawn works well) on each one, rub the soap in with some water and wash again (rinsing well to get all the soap out). That should fix it!

I only get leaks when I fail to change him, and the inserts are totallly soaked through - occasionally at night and during the day/first thing in the morning when I forget/am lazy

And uh... I throw all my bg's in the drier, probably 90% of the time Occasionally I hang them up, in the summer I try to hang dry all our clothes but uh... it doesn't always happen. My 2.0s lasted a solid 3 yrs and were/are still usable - gave them to a friend. My 3.0s are now 9 months and going strong

We get leaks with the BGs when we don't get a good enough seal. for my almost 7 month old, I use both inserts, the newborn doubled over the one size, and everything goes in the washer/dryer on high heat (Just make sure to use the laundry tabs)

Hmmm..I'm thinking (after a small leak yesterday) it may be an insert that wasn't properly put in and seemed bunched up .... but I am going to try all your ideas. I do sometimes use the bigger inserts (out of convenience)..and he does seem to be wetting heavier now so maybe I'll switch to those for day time...was just using them at night....now I'm doubling the small ones at night. Anyway, thanks for everyone's ideas!!!

I'm having more leaking....it's through the legs only now...and not with every diaper, but several a day...just enough to dampen the onsie he wears.... I use the larger insert now as he soaks the newborn one very quickly (he's just over 2 months old now) I'm wondering if I should adjust the sizing of the diaper...he's still on the first set of snaps and nowhere can I find suggestions on when to know it's time to change snaps...I can't imagine he's big enough yet but thought well maybe since I'm using the larger insert??

It wouldn't hurt to try using the next set of snaps. I typically match my snaps to which size insert I'm using, just like you mentioned. Newborn, use the smallest set, regular insert buttoned once, next set and overnight, when I have the regular + newborn, I have the dipe fully unbuttoned.

Oh, another thing to check - make sure the leg openings aren't rolling outward so the microsuede is rolling out and touching the clothes. Maybe wetness is transferring out that way?

Thank you!!!

Snap-crotch shirts can get into the leg openings of the diaper and get wet that way.
