So, what have you liked for "out and about" with your toddlers?
My little girl is just 1, starting to walk, very active little girl. She is also a younger sister, which means she's not always doing things on her ideal schedule/rhythm. I don't really want to be changing pants multiple times (and carrying around all those extra dry, and then possibly wet, pants) when we are out.
She recently started to be willing to use outside potties (until recently would only potty at home). So, I am thinking that it might be good to think about our diaper system, thinking ahead to next fall, when we will be living in NYC, where we will be out on foot a lot, in a city notoriously lacking in handy bathrooms, and also dealing with colder weather. And she will be 16mo.
I am not wanting to buy a whole new stash, just think about how to add to what I have.
We have a bunch of ME Sandy's- nice, absorbant, comfy fitted cotton diapers. I used these as sort of "at home" trainers (coverless) w/ DS when he was a toddler and have been doing the same w/ DD. I was thinking, for a girl, that she could basically wear some sweater-sleeve-longies or shorties (or knitted if I get around to that or can entice anyone else to do that for her) with a dress or tunic over them, and the Sandy's in there, and it can come up and down like pants and undies, but if she wets, no big deal.
We have a bunch of prefolds, and I just read about the "simply cloth" covers and I am intruigued. You can use those like pull-up-and-down undies, but just switch the prefold if needed? and they are waterproof? This might be just what I was looking for- would make for more flexibility in outfits (esp in cold or wet weather). I also have a few hemp pocket inserts, seems like I could use those in there too.
I have a lot of fuzzi bunz- these are on loan. Currently this is what we use when out and about, they are just so easy to deal with, and I think they do keep her relatively dry w. misses. But they are not so great for pulling up and down- to keep them fitting right, you have to snap them fairly tight. We'll probably continue to use them over the summer, and then return them to their owner when we move in Sept.
Any advice? What has worked for you, if you are a relatively low-stress ECer (don't take baby constantly if life is too interesting) w/ a baby who uses the potty but doesn't initiate it?
