Does your baby choke and lose their breath?

I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow about my thrush and thigh rash that's not clearing up but I wanted to run this by you all.

Does anyone else's baby pull off the breast, choking and lose their breath fir a moment? It's not consistent and sometimes it happens out of the blue when she's off the breast. I know rhi said that L had these episodes. Her gag reflex is quite high and I don't suspect i have a forceful letdown.

Combined with the episodes of night crying where she's arching her back and wanting to nurse, but pulls off and cries, I'm wondering if we should look into reflux. Most of the day she's a very happy baby who nurses fine. She spits up some liquid milk and curdled milk but not huge quantities.

Yes, but I do have a very strong let-down and an oversupply issue...

Can you put her on a slant at night and see if that helps a little?

I would ask your ped, but beware the quick jump to reflux meds if that's not where you want to go.

She even sleeps really well at night. I just don't remember my first 2 having choking episodes like this.

DD2 does it sometimes. I don't think I have forceful let-down, but I know there is a lot of milk that does come out (I pump some, so I know it comes out in decent amounts).

Both of our foster babies had reflux & they both had v sensitive gag reflexes. The one whose reflex was uber sensitive actually barely ever spit up. She had silent reflux & was not bothered by it as long as she got the correct formula & thus never needed meds. I would def look into reflux as a reason for unexplained crying jags.

Yes! My baby does this at least a few times a day. I don't think I have a forceful letdown either. I have a ped appt Monday; will be asking about it then. It's so horrible to watch. My mom saw it happen yesterday and was totally freaked out.

When my son does the arching back crying thing - its cause he needs winding. He somehow managed to take in a lot of air whilst feeding - and pulling on and off like that just adds to the air he takes in. He farts a lot of it out but when hes doing the arched back crying thing...he needs help getting it out the other end (burping).

I do have a forceful letdown ...though I only know this cause I have seen it squirt across the room! lol If I make sure he feeds from one breast many times (we can go half the day on one breast cause I haver a HUGE supply as well) before offering the other - that helps with the forceful letdown thingy.

He does the random choking thing too. My only guess is drool/bubbly saliva that has tickled the back of his throat. Can't be much else. He rarely spits up and when he does its just cause hes been sucking for comfort and really didn't want that milk! lol (another reason we feed on one side many times before swapping a boob! lol....if I offered a different boob every feed, I could feed Africa by now! lol)

Either way - I don't think its anything to be concerned about.

Our little one just caught the cold everyone has. I have noticed he is sort of choking on the excess mucus after he nurses.

Yes, my little one does this all of the time. At first, I would get him upright and pat his back, but then I started noticing that he got over it just as fast when he was left alone and would go back to the breast in like 5-10 seconds. My guess is that he just had too big of a gulp and is all fine. At this point it seems normal. If I had to drink off of a squirting hose I would probably choke all of the time too!

I think it's just a disruption in the suck/swallow/breathe cycle that happens either spontaneously as she's learning to nurse or that happens when she gets a bit more than she bargained for. That's what I think too. My DD does the same thing several times a day.

I do have a very forceful letdown, but I noticed DD copes by not fully latching on...instead she just holds her mouth over my nipple and gulps. Once the initial spray is over she latches on normally.
