signs of milk allergy in breastfed infant

Can anyone share what may signal that an infant has a milk allergy?
ds2 is 6 weeks old, he's basically had a diaper rash since being a week or so old. I was on antibiotics for mastitis, so it looked like a yeast infection naturally, and he's been on nystatin for a week. It got better for a few days, but now it's back again. in addition to the bumpy yeast looking rash, he's been constantly red along the part of his bum that would be in touch with poop.
His poop has been quite liquidy, more than I remember my first child's. It was occcasionally seedy, but now it's liquidy, barely thicker than water, and yellowy-orange. It dribbles out throughout the day, and sometimes theres a huge huge gush. He doesn't sit in a poopy diaper for mor than 60 seconds.. he screams. He is diaper free for about 6 hours a day. He's always been pretty cranky and likes to be constantly swaddled up and held.
Since the prescription yeast meds havent gotten rid of it in a week, I'm just starting to investigate if there's anything else going on, and the idea of milk protein allergy came up.

It sounds like something is bothering him. It could be food allergy or intolerance. Dairy is the most common, so that's a good thing to start with. You'd need to take it all out to be certain. And there's other common foods as well (gluten, soy, corn, and any of the top 8 allergens). You might want to start a food journal to see if you notice any pattern to things if you start eliminating foods.

I would not start with any elimination now. I would get a really good infant probiotic since you were on antibiotics and try that before anything.

Good luck!

ITA... sounds a lot like my ds at that age. I was on antibiotics for a uti when he was a few days old. I wonder to this day, if I had been more proactive in finding and giving him a really great probiotic we might have avoided his gut issues that resulted in his food intolerances and allergies and the subsequent issues that keep me coming to this board.... we use HLC Pharmax Probiotics now. These have given us the best results but there are others out there that are also good. Not sure what would be best for such a tiny baby though. hth

My dd had very different symptoms at that age, but I just wanted to answer your original question...dd had insomnia whenever I had a glass of milk.

good luck.

It could be any number of foods. I too would work on the probiotics as the yest killers and abx can wipe the good guys out. Being very uncomfortable in a pooh diaper can mean there is something that is an allergen. Sure is with my kids.

As food what dairy allergies are like, it is different with everyone. With my some he gets stuffy and thick cradle cap. I can't remember what his diapers were like form it as we have avoided it for so long.

I am not saying a babe should sit in a diaper, but I used to think it was normal if they got a rash if they were in their pooh for more than 5 minutes, but now I realized that is not right. This happened to my dd until I figured out her allergies. With my ds, I don't have to drop everything and run to get him a new diaper. This is the way is should be with no rashes.

Hugs and hope you figure it out!

signs of milk intolerance in my kids as babes: eczema, cradle cap, fussiness, weird poop. i still think though that you are dealing with the after effects of the abx. you may have killed some of the yeast with the nystatin but unless you replace the good bacteria with a probiotic you may not see results. my son had the orangy-yellow, liquid poop also. it would soak completely into the diaper, no seediness. fixing up the flora in his (and your) gut will help him avoid food intolerances in the long run... just my opinion but i wish i had this insight when my son was tiny. i may not be here now.
