What do low temps AFTER ovulation mean?

Hello my lovely ladies,

I've been TTC baby #1 for 6 months, but I've only charted temps the past 4 cycles.

I'm 28 and DH is 31 and we are starting to get discouraged

I've had very normal cycles up until now (anywhere from 29-34 days), ovulating at CD18, with luteal phase being a constant 14 days.

THIS cycle (6th month TTC, but 4th months charting), I ovulated late at CD21. I didn't get my normal ovulation pain/twinge in my lower tummy which I found odd, but I did get a positive (happy face) on ClearBlue Digital Ovulation Test for just that CD21 day.

I didn't think anything of it, as I've read that many ladies ovulate late due to stress, but what concerned me was that my temps didn't go up at all! They stayed the same as pre-ovulation temps.

What could this mean?

do you have a link to your chart? are your temps taken reliably? do you check cm/cp also? it's hard to say, especially without seeing the chart, but it is very possible you havent o'd yet, since a + opk indicates an lh surge, but not the o itself. anyone can have a funky cycle once in a while. also, what cd are you now? it can take a day or so for temps to go up after o.

Yeah, I agree with karma - if your temps haven't shown a clear shift, you probably geared up to ovulate but haven't ovulated yet.

one other thing i didnt really catch before- but if you had a +opk on cd21, that would most likely indicate an o on cd23, and a temp rise starting on cd24, so depending on what day you are now, maybe you just havent seen it yet.

Hi ladies,

Thank you SO MUCH for your responses! I don't chart here, rather on paper that I print off from my FAM book.

I got the +OPK on CD21 and today is CD25 (sorry I didn't mention this earlier)! This is why I was concerned.

Also I took another OPK test on CD22 and it was negative so I thought I would ovulate on CD23 or even CD24, but no. Today is CD25.

Can a surge in LH last this long?

Yes, I am taking my temps properly at the same time in the morning and using the same "pocket" under my tongue, but i've always had problems "reading" my CF/CM because we use Pre-Seed while TTC, and I never know which is which.

I've also read that low temps could mean low progesterone, but isn't that only the case if you have NOT ovulated?

I'm so confused and I don't want to start worrying that something could be wrong with me

It sounds like you haven't ovulated yet. When I used OPKs, my temp rise was as much as 4 days after my +OPK. Not sure if that is a bad thing or not, and I stopped using them. But as a pp said, the OPK detects the LH surge and does not guarantee that ovulation will take place.

I know I was really stressed out this month, but this has never happened to me before. I always ovulate 2 days max after the +OPK.

Could be an anovulatory cycle, or could be you will O later this cycle and end up with a much longer cycle than usual.

what you were asking about the surge lasting long- that's not it in this case, because your opks are negative. (they can last several days 4,5,6 even more in ladies with pcos, but that's a whole 'nother topic.) your surge only lasted a day. but lh rises and falls all the time, and every now and then, we have a surge that just doesnt make the follicle pop. we gear up to o, and then, nothing. but that is ok. it will come back. if i were you, i would keep temping and keep taking opks. (fyi- ic's are great and very cheap so you can use as many as you want, so if you dont have any yet, you can order them for next cycle if you need to.) if you cant check cm, consider checking cp- it is very helpful, in the same way an opk is- as a backup to what you see with your temps (and cm if you could check it.)

another thing, you may know this- but fertilityfriend.com is free. it's a nice program if you want to use it instead of paper. you can pay for the vip version, or you can just use the free version for as long as you want.

just one other thing- re: is it anovulatory? it's just too soon to know. anovulatory cycles usually have really pronounced, jagged looking temp variations from day to day. more often, if you are in line to o but just waiting, the pre-o temps stay in a tighter range. that's not in stone, and sometimes it starts looking anov and settles down. but you can go to ff and search the chart gallery for late o's and anov's and all kinds of things if you want to see what other womens' charts typically look like.

internet cheapies and cervical position-

you can buy good opks and hpts online at amazon.com, ebay, and other sites for like 30 cents a piece for opks. wondfo (or is it wondfro?) is one manufacturer of very good, cheap tests they sell thru amazon etc.

your cervical position changes with the levels of estrogen- when you are fertile, it's high up in the back of your vag and soft like your lips (mine gets downright squishy.) when you arent fertile, it sits low in your vag and is harder like your nose. if you havent done it before, it takes just a little time to get the hang of it.

yeah. preseed is for vaginal dryness. a lot of ladies think it's like a substitute for ewcm. you can go to the website and it explains what it does- alleviates vag dryness with a lube that will not harm sperm (unlike most lubricants.) but i know there is a big contingent that swears preseed is the reason they finally got their bfp. and maybe it is, who knows. if you have a problem with dryness, like not having enough arousal fluid to enjoy yourself when you are dtd on demand, try it. otherwise, well, it's up to you, but remember it's only in the vag. you need good cm in the cervix, inside, to get those spermies up to the tubes, and to get that, there are other things to try, like lots of water. green tea, supplements that some ladies here like, like evening primrose, i dont know what else, there's a whole host of things. robitussin, grapefruit juice, lots of stuff. start with water.

Sorry to bother you again ladies, but things have been the same. My temps have not gone up and it's CD28 today. They have been either below or at the coverline of 36.5 C

Normally my cycle is 30-33 days, so I'm wondering if I should be expecting AF in a few days.

I don't think I will be getting her soon though because I don't have ANY of the symptoms. Normally I can feel her coming a week before!

Another thing that's weird is that I have that funny ovulation twinge/pain this morning. I will do an OPK test today, but I have a question; is it possible to ovulate twice? Remember, I got a +OPK on CD21 but no temp rise since.

Ok - WEIRD! I just got a very + ovulation test. I didn't use the digital one, just the pee on a stick ones you get from Early-Pregnancy-Tests.com

What does this mean?!! I already got a + on ClearBlue on CD21 and now again on CD27.

What's going on?

P.S. I don't have anymore PreSeed. Is there anything else I can use over the next couple of days!?

I think it is very possible to get two OPK +s in a month. You can have your LH surge(this is what the OPK tests for) and then it actually not produce O but another surge will come and try to get you Oing. I do not think it is common to have this happen I do think it is possible. Maybe you are just have a late O? Good luck i hope it all turns out.

Yeah, it sounds like you geared up to ovulate and didn't so now your body is trying again - i would get busy dtd! You can use egg whites instead of preseed though it's kind of gloppy lol
