Braxton-Hicks began around 5:30 at night, which were manageable, and coming about every 4 or 5 minutes for awhile. After several hours, they began slowing down to 10-15 minutes. Michelle went to sleep around 11pm, but was awoken every 30 minutes by a strong, but manageable pressure wave, and was able to go back to sleep after each one.Friday 14 May 2010
By 6:00AM, DH (Michael) was awoken and told to get ready, that we were going to have a baby today. Michael started a warm bath and was in the bath tub by 7:00AM, complete with candles and HypnoBabies playing on the iPhone. By this point, midwife Jenn and friend Jen B. ("Auntie Jen") had both been alerted and were on their way.
Soon-to-be-big-sister-Brigid woke up at 7:30 and wanted to join Mommy in the tub, so she suited up and commenced to become Mommy's birthing partner. She was a quick study and soon was placing her steady hand on Mommy's shoulder during a pressure wave and telling her to "release". So so proud of her.
Jen B. arrived at 8am and started making bagels & cream cheese for Michelle, which she ate all of 3 bites. After an hour in the tub, Michael started to transfer buckets of warm water from the tub to the fishy pool, and we moved the entourage to the pool in the family room.
Midwife Jenn arrives around 8:20 and uses an underwater Doppler to check on Fiona, which verifies a strong, steady heart rate. She decides that we have a few more hours to go and that she is heading to the office and will return by 11am.
Brigid is becoming antsy in the pool and has a hard time staying still and quiet while Mommy is having her pressure waves and needing to concentrate on self-hypnosis. Babysitter Adrienne arrives around 9:30 and takes Brigid to a play-date with her friends.
At 10:10, an excited yelp is heard from the bathroom, where Michelle is using the toilet. She proudly shows off her expelled mucous plug. Pressure waves are coming every 2 minutes at this point, stronger with each pass. Michael calls Midwife Jenn to update her on Michelle's quickly changing situation and Jenn decides it's time to quickly head back to the house.
Michelle returns to the pool & gets on her knees with her arms hanging over the side wall. Auntie Jen and Michael are near her head to support her during her increasing pressure waves.
At 10:25, the pressure waves quickly gather in frequency and intensity & Michelle starts her "primal scream" and states that she feels the need to push. A brief check confirms that she is not crowning yet. She is cautioned that it is too early to push and that she needs to "go deeper" (and she thinks the person who said this is out of his mind.)
Her second wave is much quieter but quickly replaced by a deep, primordial vocalization. Michelle exclaimed "She's out!" and indeed, Fiona's head was out down the her chin and had already made the quarter turn. At about 10:28, Fiona's left hand was snug up against her face, but she was eerily still and had not started to breathe yet, as her chest was still snug in the birth canal. Her right arm popped out and the cord was quickly assessed to ensure it was not wrapped around her neck, which it thankfully was not. The pulsing cord wound its way from her right hip, up her chest and behind her neck, back around to her chest, as if it were a snake resting comfortably, along for the ride.
At 10:30, with on last push from Michelle, Fiona wriggled out to join the world, placed on Mommy's chest and covered with warm, wet towels.
Midwife Jenn arrives about 20 minutes later to find everyone happy, healthy, and giddy that we all did it ourselves and said we just learned the secret of their profession: that they're really not needed to be present for births. We wait for the cord to stop pulsing before Daddy cuts it. APGAR is rated (by Daddy) to be 8 & 9, and Midwife Jenn does a newborn check and finds Fiona to be healthy, happy, and perfect!
