Homeschool Teachers?

This might belong in working and students parents, but it seemed more appropriate here...

I'm currently a SAHM going to school to become a teacher. However, I love the idea of homeschool and would like to homeschool DS. My question is, are there people out there that "homeschool" a small group of kids, tailoring each students education to fit the individual, etc. Basically offering the benefit of homeschool to parents who aren't able to do it themselves.

Has anyone heard of or done this? Are there tons of hoops to jump through in order to make it work? Is it even feesible or desireable? Would you or people you know like to do this? What would be reasonable to charge to teach other people's kids?

Would it be too limiting for my DS, whom I would LOVE to HS?

This is a new thought for me (not HSing DS, but being a HS teacher to other's kids). And I'd love to know your opinions.

You could teach a class as part of a co-op but not as a full time educator to children from another family in my state. Our law states that, "An instructional program provided to more than one family unit does not constitute a home-based private education program" aka homeschool

You would need to look at your state's homeschooling laws to find out if you could do this legally.

I used to be a tutor specializing in homeschooled kids. For a while I was a real old fashioned governess, working full time as a teacher for one family. At other times I tutored individual students, usually in writing. I also ran a little art class for homeschooled kids for 2 semesters.

So I definitely think there is a market for what you want to do. I found that word of mouth was the best advertising. Once I sort of got into the group, my name was passed around by parents. I found some work on Craigslist too.

To be totally honest, the amount of call for this is probably pretty dependent on area. I live in a fairly affluent area, where people who homeschool have plenty of money to spend on tutors and extracurriculars. I've heard through friends that both NYC and Palo Alto have massive homeschool tutor industries, among very wealthy families who are dissatisfied with their school options and travel a lot. I'm not sure how much business you would get in a less affluent area, unless you really bought something unique to the table. For example, ability to teach a foreign language or experience working with special needs students.

i currently homeschool 2 boys. next year, i will continue to work with them as well as my own son. i make a great hourly wage.

actually, i recently started a service that provides in-home teachers to families in the atlanta metro area. there really is a demand for this type of service as people are realizing that school simply does not work for everyone. the name of my business is "school your way" and the site will come up if you google it. check it out and it might answer a few of your questions.

i have only met one other mama who homeschools children other than her own. she currently homeschools her own child as well as 4 others. she is super organized and does a great job. the students are progressing and are happy, the parents are thrilled and she truly enjoys teaching.

much of it totally depends upon your state. many states have laws that clearly state that a parent must do the homeschooling. others are more liberal. check the hslda website and do a search for your state.

ITA it would mainly be a legality thing. A hs mama I know runs an in home daycare (legally intended for babies & preschoolers) but "cares for" a seven year old along with her six year old.
