just adopted rescue dog

There's an animal control facility closing for renovations and they have to adopt out all the animals or euthanize. Well, we went down looking for a second cat and....we came home with a dog!!! He's the ugliest corgi/russel mix I've ever seen and he's amazing. 7 years old, nuetered, house trained, basic commands, love my toddler and could care less what the cat's doing (the cat isn't very happy). He's a chunker so I'm sure the vet will want him on a special diet, and I think he has a touch of kennel cough. He just follows us around and he fell asleep with hus tail still wagging

Now I need ideas on homemade items I can spoil him with. Recipes, toy ideas, anything. Help me give him all the love he deserves.

Congratulations! He sounds like a sweetie.

Don't let the vet talk you into a "weight loss" food, they're usually full of fillers and junk. A little less of the regular food (or a grain-free one) and a little more exercise an you'll get him into shape.

Aw! Congratulations!

I have a corgi mix, and she is the BEST dog! She's old now, and I'm going to sorely miss her when she is gone.

But back to you:
You might enjoy doing clicker training with him. Sound like he is very people oriented, and he would probably LOVE the one on one attention. Plus, you'll have the added bonus of a well behaved dog. How was he in the car on the ride home? If he was good, then make sure to take him for rides at least once a week. Car rides are the highlight of my corgi's life, and we always make sure to do something fun, like visit a friend that gives treats (we're vegetarian, so my dog loves going to my meat-eating best friend's house), or find a friendly dog to play with. It keeps them loving the car, which makes vet visits and travel so much easier!!! Plus, positive socialization makes a happy, well adjusted dog!

thanks everyone! I will definately check out the sites. He LOVES the car so that's a nice bonus. i think he was smacked around previously, he cowers if you reach for him withuot announcing, and while trying to clean his ears he gave me a warning. Looks likes there's some training to do and trust to build.

So sweet that he's got a new home and family!

We brought an approx 8 month old pup home from the pound 11 years ago tomorrow (we call it "happy ruby day" as it's not her b'day, lol) and it is so sweet to watch them check out their new life -- somehow they just know!

Anyhow, Ruby was super easy and well behaved for the first 3 mos we had her. The reason that she was at the pound was that she had been removed from her previous home for neglect/abuse. And she did (and still does) have some serious behavioral problems that were clearly a result of being abused. She has been a wonderful, wonderful family dog for us though -- always super sweet with the kids and totally loyal. She is NOT nice to anyone else though. The sad part of that is that it has really limited her fun, no offleash time at dog beach, for instance. I hope you have better luck in terms of that stuff, but of course I wouldn't trade her for anything.
