Going coverless...

Those of you who do this a lot, can you talk to me about logistics? I assume you put something under the baby - what do you do? I need to do this with DS - he's got very reactive skin like his sister - and can use any hints you can send my way - I'm sure it's not rocket science but it's a bit of a shift in thinking!

DD went coverless a lot as a toddler. I would just put her prefold on and let her go. I would check her often and change as soon as I noticed her wet. With a non mobile baby I suppose you could put a large prefold, wool pad, thick blanket (fleece works well) or a towel under them... but I am willing to bet, if you caught them wet with the first pee you wouldn't need anything under them. It gets easier after a few days going coverless... I noticed that I would just know when it was time to change DD, her diaper would still be warm. Oh, you could also add a doubler in the diaper for extra absorbency and ditch the padding under baby, just change as soon as baby wets. Hope that helps some.

i just end up changing ds ALOT. with a cover, he gets changed about every 2 hours, so probably every hour w/o a cover. just one pee and he is wet enough for me to not want to hold him. he is 13 months, so he still gets held a ton. i also dont put pants/shorts on him when he is coverless - instead of spreading out, ive found that that one pee just stays in a little spot that goes through all the way (but doesnt leak.)

...hmm, does that make sense? lol

Ds is mostly coverless. We change him after every pee, or his rash gets worse. I've never noticed anything getting wet, except that I can feel the wet when I carry him to the changing pad.

A few ideas:
Fleece pants or shorties make awesome covers- it's all we use.
Fleece blankets would work under non-mobile babies.
If you put a doubler in the diaper, it would be less likely to soak though and get anything else wet.

While ds was still immobile I would just keep a stack of prefolds close by & every time he'd wet I'd change him asap. The dipe would get soaked but whatever he was lying on wasn't in contact long enough to get wet.

Alternatively I would just lay him nakey on top of a bunch of prefolds & when he wet I'd pull the wet one off the top of the pile. He was never one to pee up in the air though - not sure if it would work so well with a baby that does.

Like pp have said, as a immobile baby I put a water proof mat down on my lap, or against by belly depending on how I was holding them. Really it didn't matter unless they were napping on me and then I don't change as soon as they pee.

With a toddler I just let them go checking often and when they wet throw a new diaper on.

stupid question, but what's the reason for going coverless?

I do it for better air flow and so I know when she needs a change as I like to change after every pee.

my ds was coverless a lot. he ran around with just the prfold and nothing really got wet, other than me
I also let him go entirely without a diaper quite a bit, and he was potty trained when he was 28 months as a result

Thanks to you all. I've been trying this the last couple of days (the doubler had never occurred to me, but I have some preemie prefolds that are working like a charm for this!) and his skin is already looking better.

We go coverless around the house and dung naps we cover when out and over night.. or when diaper does the diaper change since he uses the AIOs, overall I don't do anythign special she is in arms so when I feel a litttle dampness I go change her sometimes f shes nursing I just stick another prefold on my lap as extra protection.

As for why we go coverless..
A few reasons
1) heat I live in southern AZ its jsut down right hot so the more air can flow the better
2) not sitting in a dirty diaper.. I will NOT for very personal reason I wont go into staight out EC but I try to do the next best and that to do my best to ensure my LO gets a fresh clean diaper ASAP when ever possible.
3) child dislikes being wet... Shes doesn't like being wet and since she can alert me to a wet diaper at LEAST each hour once less step it jsut easier
