In the second, the straps are positioned to hold the child in and up. The child is basically sitting on the X of the straps. The weight is entirely on her hips (okay, if she'd gotten the waist band a smidge higher I could say that for sure, but it was the first back carry picture with the strap cross trick I found)
Anyway, if you've been thinking your LO is getting kind of heavy and it hurts to wear them, try changing out your strap positioning. Also make sure your waistband is actually at your waist and not on your hips. (get the bottom of the strap above your hip bones, think about where you set a heavy laundry basket)
