Gift for preemie twins

My colleague's wife had her twin girls at 25 weeks. They are currently 28 weeks and will stay in the NICU until they are 40 weeks, according to my colleague.

I would really like to buy them baby gifts that would be helpful and useful to them during this time, but I am unsure what that would be.

Or would it be better to just get them something for when they come home from the hospital? If so, what would be most useful and appreciated?

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

The truth is, preemies in the NICU dont need much, they can sleep up to 24 hrs a day. The hospital provides onesies for them (could be different at different hospitals) and if mom is not nursing, they provide formula.
THe best gift may be things for the parents, books, crossword puzzles and easy meals. If mom and/or dad are spending all day in the NICU, they will probably want meals both for at the hospital and dinners for when they come home.
You could get one or 2 preemie onesies too and maybe a blanket, but I have to admit, we were so overwhelmed with preemie clothes and smalll blankets, we didnt even get to use them all.

Agreed. DS wasn't allowed to even wear clothes for a while (diaper only). Our church family provided meals every other day. Some people chose to give us gift cards for takeout, etc instead of prepared meals...that was also great! I loved not having to worry about meals when we were so busy going back and forth to the hospital.

Thanks. That is what I was thinking.

I figured I would just get them a gift card for take-out, something for the 7 year old brother and something for the girls for when they come home.

Just reiterating- get thee some gift cards! I honestly don't remember exactly what I ate during our NICU time, but I do know that my family always fed us, or we had cards for food. After awhile, hospital cafeteria food is really awful.

This might sound kinda weird, but you can also send the NICU nursing staff some goodies. Send it with a card signed "From the friends and family of the X Family Twins". That will earn the family huge brownie points in the NICU, and those relationships really help. My dad send our nurses an BBQ rib dinner. Our relationships with them improved after that.
