blood from baby's nipple

a week and a half ago we found tiny specks of blood on our 9mo's shirt, where his left nipple would be. we stripped him, checked ourselves, and found nothing. it happened again the next morning, in the exact place.

i pinched his nipple, but nothing came out. we took him to the doc and she said if it happens again, bring him in that day, unwashed, and bring the shirt.

today there was one speck of blood. i pinched the nipple, and while no blood came out, i could see that there was a tiny dot (the size of a pin prick) that was purple. as if there was blood under the surface.

well today is sunday, so i cannot take him to see her. she didn't give weekend instructions, so i'm waiting for tomorrow, to phone her.

what i want to know is: has this happened to your baby? if so, what was the reason.

thanks.

I don't have any answers for you, but I found this thread. It makes me think it's not all that unheard of, so hopefully it doesn't indicate a problem.

This happened to DD!! And this is the first time I've ever heard about it happening to anyone else. Our ped had absolutely no idea what would cause it, and told us not to mess with it and maybe it would go away (it did.) I did some research and found a couple really old medical journal articles (here's one), and it seems really rare. Doesn't seem like they found any reasons for it either.

It was also DD's left nipple, and when we pressed gently on either side of the nipple (to show the ped), a small drop of blood would come out. It was pretty freaky, so we took the doc's advice and didn't touch it again. It did stop within a few months I think.

This is the article that's referenced in the other thread, about the 7 cases. From what I can tell, it concludes that bloody discharge from a baby's nipple isn't necessarily pathological, and usually resolves on its own. I would still have my ped check it out, but don't panic in the meantime.
