Does this sound like a UTI? (1 yr old)

OKay, I'm close to tears right now because I'm afraid my son might have a UTI.

He had a fever on Thursday. He pretty much slept the whole day. No other symptoms whatsoever. I only treated it enough to keep him comfortable.

A little bit about my son: He's a heavy wetter. He pees A LOT when he pees and he does it frequently. It's been like that since he was born. We let him go diaper free a lot because he inherited my sensitive skin and is prone to diaper rash (even in cloth) Also, because of the constant peeing, it's easier to try to "catch him" peeing and put him on the potty than go through a ton of prefolds in a day.

Today he hasn't peed much. A couple of times that he's peed it's prefaced by crying. Now, most of them were because he was genuinely upset (I wouldn't let him tear up a book for instance) and, after screaming in frustration, he started peeing. This actually happens fairly often with him...

However, when he woke up from his most recent nap it was a long time before he peed again..and it was only a "spurt" of pee. DH said he seemed uncomfortable at the time. I sat him on the potty and nursed him (try to get him to relax) and got nothing...so he crawled away and, while playing a few feet from me, peed a fair amount.

His pee varies in color from almost clear to a pale yellow. He doesn't look like he's dehydrated and there's no reason for me to think that there's blood in his urine.

He's in good spirits otherwise. I think he's teething and I had trace dairy recently so we've dealt with a few tantrums. No fever today (actually not since thurs)

I did a search online and he has, like, one or two of the symptoms...everything I saw says they'll have to cath him. I can't handle that. Would one of those OTC tests work?

You can request a bag taped over him instead of cathing.

Hmm when my DS had a UTI he had foul smelling, cloudy urine, and was definitely uncomfortable - no fever though.

If he pees without a diaper regularly, you could just catch it in a urine sample cup (see if your local drugstore has them)

Luckily when my DS had one at like 19 months? He was familiar with the potty, so peeing in the cup was something new & fun for him.

If you can get D. Mannose powder it is great for e.coli bacteria (if that's what's causing it) It can't cure an infection as we learned (we tried everything natural) but if it's just starting you may get lucky. Of course you could do the cranberry juice or pills too I think.

I hope it's not a UTI

See...that's the thing. His pee is fine. I mean, when it sits in the diaper I get a strong ammonia smell (my laundry room always smells like that) but that's been going on since we started solids.

I'm not sure how convenient it is for you to get him to pee in a urine sample cup and take it to your ND/DR for an in office dip. They can tell right there if there are ketones, glucose, or infection markers.

I know you probably don't want to make an unnecessary trip in, but it may put your mind at ease....

My DS's normal pee - is varying shades of yellow and always clear (although we seem to be experiencing some calcium weirdness making is urine cloudy...but that's for another thread)

In our UTI experience the worst smell/colour was in the early morning.

Argh, now I don't know what to think. He's fine this morning. He had a rough night as far as sleep goes BUT he's also congested and he doesn't take too kindly to it.

He's peeing fine (I just got peed on and there was no crying) and it smells and looks normal (You know you're a parent when...) and I've got the pregnancy nose so if it smelled AT ALL I'd know it.

If you are still concerned I would recommend getting the azo test strips from the pharmacy (or even wal-mart has them). They are good for screening for a uti. They are about ten bucks for three test strips. Pricey, but good for peace of mind if you can't make it into the dr and want to know right away.

Also, I wanted to say that it could be possible that your ds just had a bug and with the fever his body burned up more fluids than normal resulting in less urine output. I just wanted to put that out there because in the past when my dd has had fever, unless I really push fluids, her urine output was much less.
