Lewellen
Llewellyn
Luellen

I've only ever heard this name used as a boys name but dh and I both like it and think of it as a girl's name.

Too weird? Do you like it? What does it make you think of? Have you ever heard this name before?

don't like it. :/ i want to, and there *is* something that's "catching" me--the ellyn part? but the lou sound does it in for me and makes me think boy.

but if it speaks to you, i think there's a reason. i know if i posted here the name i'm strongly drawn to atm, not many would give me their blessing!

I've heard it only as a last name. I like it, and prefer the second spelling. But then, I'm Welsh.

as a Pagan, this is the first thing that comes to mind...

I've only ever seen the second spelling as a last name.

Ive only ever seen it as a name for a little girl in braids running around barefoot and in a dirty/ripped dress in the Ozarks so thats the first thing that pops in my mind.

Llewellyn is the name of a couple of restaurants in my area and I love the name. It makes a great girl's name in my opinion. If it weren't for the restaurants here, I'd consider it myself.
Also, if you love it, use it and forget what people think.

Love it as a boys name (second spelling)...not feeling the love for it as a girl's name. Probably because I know too much about medieval Welsh history.

ETA: It would be like naming a girl David. Or George.

I've only heard it as a girls' name. I like the second spelling.

I've only ever heard of it as a girl's name. I would probably spell it Luellen.

I thought this was the dudes name in No Country for Old Men.

Luella was my favorite grandmother's middle name and the first name of this baby if it's a girl. We'll probably call her Lulu for short. It's not exactly the same but it's close ;-) I like your second spelling.

For a boy, it sounds wussy. For a girl, it sounds a bit redneck. (At least, spelled Luellen.)

It was.

Isn't is pronounced flew-ellen? Or clue-ellen? The first sound is one of those phlegmy Welsh consonants. Like you clear your throat and then say Ellen.
It's very much a man's name, and a pretty important man's name in Welsh history. It would be kind of like naming a girl after King Arthur.

I would be hesitant to use it for a girl, unless you wanted to name her Lou Ellen.

ETA: I think if you pick a big historic name for your child, it's a good idea to make sure the namesake is okay, even if the namesake isn't super well known. My kiddo is Cyrus, and when I first thought of the name I had to go and research Cyrus the Great to make sure he wasn't some evil dictator (even though most people are more familiar with Miley and Billy Ray). I would just feel weird giving a little girl a king's name.

Llewellyn is my DH's middle name. I knew a boy in school named Llewellyn and called Lew. While I have heard of "Lou Ellen," etc., for a girl, I definitely think it's a strongly male name (though my DH hated it as a small child and used to write his middle name as Lawrence, instead ).

My best hen was named Llewellen. Can't really see it as a human name anymore!

If I'm being completely honest, it sort of sounds like a redneck name to me too. The only time I've heard it was in the movie Hounddog - Lewellen was the name of Dakota Fanning's character (abused girl in the deep south in the 1950s) and the movie had a lot of controversy for depicting a child in a rape scene, so the name doesn't have a great association to it...personally I wouldn't use it, but then again there probably aren't that many people who saw the movie.

: and she is running in front of her home/trailer. It's VERY "redneck" sounding to me, and I mean no offense to anyone by saying that.
