For the first few months (up to 15lbs) - Please offer advice

I spend my Saturday night figuring out a plan of CDs for my newborn (up to 15 lbs). Here is my list. Please let me know if this is realistic or not.

• 24 - Indian Prefolds ($1.00 ea)
• 12 - Fitted Kissaluvs size 1 -12pack ($143.40)
• 8 - Thirsties Duo wrap covers ($12.25 ea)

Total = $264.40 before tax

I calculated Swaddlers (just to show DH how much we're saving) and a box of swaddlers (96 count) is $30.00. Diapers changes average anywhere between 12-16 times in a 24 hour period. A diaper ended costing about $.31-35 each. The cost would be $264.40 - $600 within the first few months alone.

Disclaimer: I wouldn't use Swaddlers, but I did with DS. I will never ever spend a penny on pampers again. I'm trying to figure out a way to cut all P&G products out of my home because I'm THAT mad.

I think that looks like a really reasonable stash!! Mine is pretty similar and it has worked for 2 kids so far... I have 36 prefolds, 5 NB covers, 5 small covers, a few fitteds and a few AIOs for night times. The best part about the prefolds is that they make awesome doublers once your child outgrows them, so they just keep getting used!!!!

What are you planning to do after 15 lbs.? If you've got something else on hand that will fit from about 12 lbs. on, that might work.

I have a 2 month old right now. He's about 13 lbs. (not sure) and the infant prefolds don't really offer enough absorbancy anymore AND they barely reach to be snappied. I still need at least 30 diapers for washing every other day (we're using about 15 diapers a day). What I've been using (since about 6 weeks) is 2 dozen capri-size prefolds from Little Lions (orange-edge ones from GMD would also work) & 4 Motherease one-size. When I run out of those I now reach for a premium size prefold. Even though I also have 3 dozen infant sized prefolds, I've been avoiding them for the last couple of weeks because he really soaks them through now.

I think with my older girls, I just switched to the premium size diapers at this age. That's really bulky, but better than having a kid who is always soaking through diapers.

You said Kissaluvs size 1, did you mean size 0?

GMD orange edge are $21/dozen and I hear they are fabulous because of the shorter rise. But if you want to cut costs there you could go with regular infant prefolds and those should be significantly less. The lowest price is usually Little Lions seconds - I think at the moment a dozen of the second infants is $13, regular price is $18. Another idea is to get seconds of the Kissaluvs too (they seem to go for $36/4 diapers).

Keep in mind that you can resell these or use them on a future kiddo. Can't do that with sposies!

I am still working on which diapers/option I am going with for when he is past a few months. I'm just trying to break it up in sizes.

See, I was concerned about the prefolds but I figure getting different sizes (also more to use as double inserts when he gets back the stage of nursing completely around the clock).

They show examples of using the prefolds as inserts, which I thought was an awesome idea, especially for night. Maybe I need to get more Kissaluvs.

in case you're interested in alternatives to the kissaluvs, I LOVE the crickett's and the newborn size goes to 20 lbs instead of 15 for about the same cost. They're more absorbent than the KALs that I had, too, and all natural fibers. I didn't get them til my baby was about 11 lbs, though, but I think they should fit much smaller, since I didn't have him on the smallest setting. Might be worth picking one up to see what you think. they have a return policy that's pretty good. Also, you *have* to wash it before you judge the size... hemp fabric shrinks a fair amount in the first few washes. I'm selling all my kissaluvs in favor of the crickett's... Ds2 has outgrown the kissaluvs now (uh, at 8 weeks and more than 15 lbs), so if there's a next baby, i'm just going with crickett's.
ETA... I loved the GMD orange edge, but my baby was 9 1/2 lbs at birth (my other two kids were more than a pound smaller at birth, and only 11 lbs at 8 weeks where Ds2 is 15 lbs ) so he could only use them for a week or two...

We had a dozen of the orange edged and LOVED them. We used a snappi and covered with 3 bummis super whisper wraps, 1 thirsties duo size 1, and 1 bummis super snap. I added the thirsties when I realized 4 was not enough covers. (Now I have 8 or 9 covers in rotation with yellow edged prefolds) The orange edged still look like new and I know I will be able to use them with however more babies we have and then some. I will definitely get another dozen for the next baby.

The size thing worries me as well because DS was average at birth 7lbs 6 oz but was 11 lbs at his two week appointment. He was 20 lbs @ 4 months and 26 lbs at 12 months. He was average weight because I had him 10 days before my due date.

The more I think about it the quicker this LO might be out of small diapers.

I'll definitly look more into the Crickett's diapers. Thanks for the tip!

just wanted to throw this in the mix for your decision. KL's have a much better resale value and you can get upto 70% of your investment back. not so much with cricketts.

i havent used criketts but can vouch for the fabulous fit and containment of KL O's. they were the first diaper we used and were the best for newborns.

we used the size 0 Kissaluvs until dd was 5 months old and they fit her fine the whole time, and she was a big baby (10 lbs at birth!) but her growth was long rather than chunkwise. we still use the size 1's we got, but they didn't fit her so well to begin with. just sayin'.

Well, my DD was well past 6mo. when she hit 15 lb. The first year we pretty much used infant prefolds and prowraps. When she started soaking them through, I'd double them by folding one in thirds inside one snappi'd on, then putting the cover over that. We went to premiums when that no longer worked. We had (I think) 3 dozen infant prefolds and 2 dozen premiums, and 3 covers in each size (2 in the newborn size). As she approached the year mark I bought some other diapers, but we could have gotten by without them.

What are premium folds?

Premium prefolds are usually the next size up after infant. Infant size is usually 12x16 inches, and premium is 14-15x21 inches.

Oh okay. That's what I assumed. I like GM prefolds. I hope they work well.
