Training Pants for a Three Month Old

I have a large 3 month old. According to the ec store Gerbers 18 month training pants will fit a big 3 or 4 month old, especially if they are doubled up. Has anyone else used this brand with such a young baby? Did it work? If you doubled it up, could you still feel it with only one pee? Or does anyone know a training pants that fits a larger 3 month old that's in a comparable price range?

They're cheap enough for a 2/3 pack that it'd be worth just trying it.

Some of us like www.sassycloth.com for cheap custom sized trainers. But they are waterproof.

Not sure why you would double up Gerber training pants, but they do not absorb anything - the "padding" in the middle is a thin polyester sponge, so urine goes right through it. Really, Gerber training pants are the same as using nothing; you won't ever miss noticing a miss with them.

how about a fitted cloth diaper with no cover? they're essentially the same as a training pant and come in small sizes.

So all they do is add some bulk so the kid feels like they are wearing a diaper and don't hesitate to pee?

Must be for kids who are working on pooping in the potty.

I made some little fitted doublers and sewed them into some gerber trainers and they worked fine for my 4mo, and still work that she's 12mo. They were cotton t-shirt sandwiching 4 layers of microfiber cleaning cloth. Sewed on one side only to make it easier to dry. They are easy to pull up and down.

We also use coverless fitted diapers (ME Sandy's) at home.

I like them both. The fitted dipes are definitely more expensive, but I already had them from my older child, and I do like them a lot.

yeah, i found those gerber trainers to be utterly useless. the bright bots are a little more expensive but they are better trainers - definitely no way you're going to fail to notice a miss, and definitely not waterproof. but will at least absorb the pee.

my youngest was in trainers around 4 months - she was pretty big, and didn't even wear the smallest trainer sizes in bright bots or in the EC Store favorite trainers, she was in the mediums. so there are definitely things out there small enough. have you tried diaperswappers or the ec swap yahoo group for some gently used ones? that's how i bought virtually all of my trainers except a few ec store ones i saved up for.

I don't see why the woman from sassycloth wouldn't be willing to make a non-waterproof trainer. It wouldn't hurt to e-mail her. She is very flexible and open to new ideas and inexpensive ($6-$8) a trainer. I have been using them for 1 yr w/ dd (although at about 7 months we went to undies all day and only used them at night and right now she only uses them at mdo 1x a wk and doesn't go in it) and they are in great shape and still fit.

We use gerbers and I find that they absorb small trickles quite nicely. They won't catch a full pee, but they absorb enough for her to realize what's happening, and stop herself so she can finish in the potty. I've doubled up on them, and found that they barely leak at all with the smaller pees.

Quite often I'll see the gerber change color (from dry to wet) and no puddle (or a very small one) will be made on the floor. I love ours.

Although in response to the OP, I don't know if they would fit a 3-4 month old though. My daughter is 25 lbs and while the 18 month size is tight on her thighs (she has big thighs), they still fit her quite nicely.

I think of ecapants as a diaper, not a trainer.

If you go the sassycloth route, get the pocket option. the soakers she provides hold a full toddler pee, and you won't need that much with a 3 month old.

I'm kind of confused... Obviously this doesn't apply for a 3 month old, but I just looked at the sassycloth website and it seems that their training pants are nothing more than waterproof pullups, with a soaker option. What I like about both the gerbers and the ecapants, is that (with older babies) they DO leak, which causes the kid to look down and wonder what's going on. They create awareness of bodily functions, and they appear to be much less bulky than the ecapants (gerbers are like thick waffle undies, so it's not worth comparing).

How (aside from being pullups) do the sassycloths work as a trainer?

well, there's the non-waterproof option. And if you don't use the soaker the PUL ones aren't waterproof either. Really, though, the recommendation to contact her was to ask if she'd do something more like a one-wet trainer, since her prices are so low.

also the sassycloth pull ups are feel-wet. When dd was 4 months old we started using them and I could tell right away when she peed bcs she started squirming and fussing and wanting them off. She wasn't that obvious with the cloth diapers that we had been using. Also just having something to pull up and down verses a diaper type system incresed catches for us bcs we were more willing to give it a try when we just had to pull down nope pull back up instead of take off cover, take off diaper , no pee, put back diaper, put back cover, etc.
If you are looking for something that is not waterproof give her a call and see if she will design something.
I originally contacted her to see if she would make them in smaller sizes and she did no problem and others have been happy too. I dont see why you can't tell her what you are looking for and see if she will make it.

My DS fit 2T Gerber trainers well enough for me at 3 months. If I need waterproof, I put a regular diaper cover over it. I prefer them to fitteds because the baby can move easier, since there's a lot less bulk.

I used Gerber trainers from the EC store at that age, and they did work for us. Her pees were so tiny, they worked fine! Sometimes I did double them up, mostly because I'd read about doing that here. The ones from Under the Nile are a little more absorbent. I switched to eca-pants when I found out about them, because they are SO EASY TO USE!!!!!

I think of eca-pants as training pants, but Hannah thinks of them as diapers, too. That's what she calls them.

Oddly enough, I find the Gerbers quite useful at the moment. I started using them when I had piles of laundry not-put-away, and they are strangely absorbent these days.

There are definitely more eco-friendly and people-friendly brands of training pants, though!
