What would you put with the name Stefan (pronounced Stef-en NOT Stef-ahn)?

DH is John Stefan...


We're thinking Michael Stefan or Stefan Michael... but I wanted more opinions

I would go with Steffen if I always wanted STEF-en. It's the "correct" English spelling of that name. "Stefan" I would always pronounce as STEF-ahn.

I think Steffen Michael or (if the name has to be spelled like your dh's) Michael Stefan are great names.

*shrugs* DH has gone by Stefan for a long time now and it turned out okay. He gets Stef-ahn or people spelling it Stephen...but he likes it.

I love middle names after people. And with the "how do you pronounce it" issue, I'd definitely use Stefan for his middle name.

Have you tried using nymbler.com to see what other names it gives to go with Stefan? You might find something good that way.

I do like Michael. What about Andrew? I like Drew as a nickname. You could go Dylan Stefan or Jordan Stefan.

Michaels just a very overdone name imo (but only because i have 3 brothers and 4 uncles with the name lol)

have you considered going with a different version?

I am particularly fond of Micah.

I agree that a variation of Michael is a more original option.
How about Stefan William? Stefan Atticus? (depends on last name, since it might spell a word...) the possibilities are endless for a middle name...but I do agree that the default pronounciation is Stef-ahn, but if it hasn't bothered your DH then his son will be fine, too.

I think Michael could be great in that way, though...it's very familiar, but people aren't using it as much anymore. Yes, it's still high on the popularity charts, but with people always trying to pick unique names, the frequency of its use has actually gone way, way down:

This chart shows that, when our uncles and brothers were getting named (the 50s through the 80s), over 20,000+ per million boy babies were being named Michael. By 2009, less than 5000 per million boy babies were being named Michael.

Now look at the Micah chart...the increase in popularity is almost exponential. In 2009, almost 900 per million boy babies were named Micah, and the popularity is rising fast.

There's something to be said for bucking the "unique" trend.

But, that said, my brother and sister were Ian and Fiona far, far before they were common. They spent their childhood saying, "No, EE-an, not eye-an" or "Fee-oo-nah" not "Fee-ah-nah". And they turned out just fine I wouldn't worry too much about pronunciation things.

I would pick the name of a loved relative or respected ancestor and forget how it sounds with the first name. Barely a soul will ever know - much less say - the two names together.

ETA: oh, I thought you meant as a middle name for Stefan. Well, for a first name, again, I wouldn't even consider how it sounded with the middle name.

Although, to be honest, I think Stefan is terrific for a first name. I knew a guy named that, and he had no pronunciation issues.

except, at the very least, to make sure it neither makes an inappropriate wording (this case, it obviously doesnt!) or inappropriate initials (dunno your last initial but i do know someone whos initials were DUM and they hated it)

Well, I turned out fine too, but seriously am so over having to spell and pronounce my name for everyone. I really wish my parents hadn't been so creative. So, there's the other side of that coin
