I feel like I am smothering my baby

I made a gauze wrap for my newborn and have been practicing wearing him around the house. I have been carrying him like the video for wombfruit and moby wraps shows...upright with froggy legs.

The top of the cumberbun that forms the pouch is right below my breasts. When I put him in, he ends up with his head nestled between the top of my breasts. He ends up with his face all squished into that soft tissue and it looks like he does not have enough space around his nose to get fresh air. I feel even worse when I bring the fabric all the way across the back of his head.

Is there something I should do different or is a wrap a bad idea for a larger breasted woman? Maybe I am just paranoid?

I hope some experienced babywearers respond to your posting soon! I avoided using my sling until my baby was old enough to hold her head up, because I was so afraid she would suffocate.

Try the front wrap cross carry instead. You can tie the wrap first (really tight since you have a newborn ) and then slip your baby inside. The front crosses work really well for supporting a little bobblehead. He'll end up sort of tucked over one breast with his head in the fabric of the wrap on that side.

Keeping in mind, that this is based off what I finally got to work for me at 3 months old, it definitely supported her head when she fell asleep, but she wasn't actually itty bitty then. You might need to add a fold somewhere to make things shallow enough to hold your LO higher up.

Ditto. You need to have his head laying on your chest, above your breast, so that he is using your breast as a pillow. That way he has a flat surface (chest) that won't block his airways. Plus you can kiss his nose as many times as you want to, which is always fun. Wrap a little higher and tuck him into one of the front crosses, with his head supported by the fabric.

unless his nose is pressed full on into your breast, he's not going to suffocate!

the rule of thumb is that you want to be able to fit 2 finger comfortable between his chin and his chest to know he's in a good position. I agree with letting him use the tops of your breasts as a pillow. You want to be able to easily kiss the top of his head when wearing him- that's how high he should be!

Just wanted to chime in as a large breasted babywearing wrapping mama! Been using baby carriers/wraps since 2 weeks old, I happily stayed in bed 80% of the time up to that point.

I adore my wrap! And ditto the advice already given.
