Homelearning Mamas, Give Me Strength to Leap!

Ok, so I'm not a big "the universe is telling me I ought to do something" person. I registered dd in kindergarten at our local school. It's full day as of this fall, but we would pull after half the day. However, I'm terrified of grade one. I want dd to spend more time outside and I want to have at least one weekday off per week.

Last week our wonderful preschool teacher told me about a former student teacher who is interested in starting a forest kindergarten. I am an environmental educator and I'm interested too, but I've been too burnt out to pursue it. I now have a meeting with the potential instructor and a possible location for a three morning/week forest kindergarten, which is basically exploring in the forest. My ideal location would be right by my workplace and would allow me to drop off my daughter before work, volunteer there once a week (we would run it as a parent participation class), and have lunch with my daughter before she went to her grandparents' house.

I would combine this with a local (ie: 20 minute drive) homelearning program and we'd have at least one weekday completely free to just hang out around the house or go on adventures. Yes, I know that this is not totally homelearning, more invent your own school, but I think it would work well for dd.

Dare I try to juggle this? My dh has been totally against homelearning, but I think that a vaguely school-like schedule might work for him. I think that the grandparents would still be willing to do childcare for a couple more years, as long as it is no more than once a week for an afternoon. I work 3 days a week and some nights after my daughter is asleep to make up full time work.

I'm going to chat with dh again tonight to see if he'll go for it. This would be a great schedule for us for a few years. Give me strength to explore these options and forge forward, while being persuasive to those who need to be persuaded.

I'm not really sure what a homelearning program is, but I think this set up sounds totally cool and perfect for you for now! I love the sound of the forest kindergarten!

Well, what's the worst that can happen? I mean, if it doesn't work out, then you can go back to plan A, whereas if you don't try it, you'll never know how it would have turned out. To be honest, it sounds like a great solution, at least on paper!

yes, I think that's it. Actually, the worst that can happen is that I'll get burnt out and dd will have an unfortunate experience. The worst that can happen in scenario A is that we get lulled into complacency with public school but I have a lot more time.

I chatted with a prospective teacher tonight ... crazy to think I might make it work for the fall, though!

If I had this opportunity I think I'd be all over it. It sounds like a great compromise for you and your dh, and she will be getting a good varriety of experiences. Plus the forest kindergarten sounds amazing!

I would TOTALLY go for this. It sounds like an awesome experience.

And, FWIW--if the public school kindergarten is going to be all day (like no other option) you really wouldn't be able to pull her out at lunch everyday. The school would be very difficult about that situation (we always got irritating letters stating the Becca law, etc just for pulling our kids out for dr appts). Not to mention that your dd might start to resist going home (away from her friends) daily--esp if the 'fun' stuff -- music, art, pe are reserved for the afternoons.

sounds intresting. I don't think i'd personally go for it for an actual school year -- that is a long time.

What about bad Weather What about When Winter arrives??

Hoever i also questions the 1/2 kindy in a full day program -- Will run into touble there ...maybe get a medical excuse from doc about it ...but school is gonna flip if you just try to take her home each day at noon.
