Dh and I finally sat down and hashed through the names we both like. Our final list is:
  • Vivian
  • Imogen
  • Ingrid
  • Aurelia
  • Corinne
  • Adeline
  • Miriam

Her middle name will be James, after her big brother who passed away a couple of years ago. He was a joy of a kid, and we really feel like his name is a blessing. It's also a family name.

So here are the stories/ideas behind each name:

Vivian: "Full of Life" ...it's what James' name means to us, and what we want for this little girl, too. The meaning is important for us. It's also the name that keeps coming up, and has been insisted upon by a certain very persistent girl in my dreams before we even knew this was a girl pregnancy. Nickname would be Vivi. ...I should add, the drawback of this name is that a friend was maybe planning on using it if she has a third child and it's a girl.

Imogen: "Last born" ...which will be true. The meaning is less important than the name, which we think is very pretty. I also love Imogen Cunningham, the photographer. Not sure about "Imogen James," but it's not bad. Nickname would be Ginny.

Ingrid: "Beautiful as Ing" The lack of meaning is a downside to this name, but Dh really likes the name itself. I think it's pretty, too. The source of the name doesn't fit with the rest of our kids, though, or our ancestry. We're Irish/German/Italian/English and a little Welsh, and our kids' names are very English.

Aurelia: "Golden" This is a last-minute addition, so we're still getting used to the idea. Both of us love the name (as well as similar names like Amelie, or Amelia...but this is our favorite). Golden might not make sense for us, though...we're all dark-haired people.

Corinne: "Maiden" Ho-hum meaning, but a lovely name. It goes well with our daughter's name, too. Nickname would be Cora.

Adeline: "Nobility or Good Queen" Eh on the meaning. This was almost dd1's name, and it's a family name (a grandmother on both sides). I love the name Adele, dh loves the name Adeline, so this one works for us.

Miriam: "Wished-for child" ...which is so true. We might go for the spelling Myriam. Nickname would by Myra or Miri.

....So, what are your thoughts? Your favorites? How heavily would you weight these dreams of Vivian (In them, the girl insists her name is Vivian...and really, she's a delightful child)? Anything to consider about these names? Last name, if it matters, starts with an M.

I voted Vivian and Ingrid because I'm a fan of classic names. What's your name style?

I don't much like Miriam, even though it's classic. Imogen seems a little hard to pronounce but is unusual. Aurelia is pretty too.

I voted for Vivian.
Don't tell my sister Corinne, lol.

I like Aurelia and Corinne best.

I like Vivian Aurelia...

Vivian James is a lovely pairing, both aurally and in meaning. Congrats, by the way!!!

Imogen Call her Immy

Absolutely hands down VIVIAN!

RedOakMomma, i noticed that you and I like a lot of the same names just from reading your posts on diff. name threads...

From your list I would have voted Vivian even before I read your intro..but after reading, there is really no question. Vivian James is stunning-both in sound and in meaning. To me meaning is so important.

Can you elaborate on choosing the spelling Vivian over Vivienne or Vivien? I am curious to hear your thoughts on that.

PS i also liked Aurelia for awhile...but as you had the same problem with it meaning golden...oh but I actually preffered it as Aurelie more.

I like Vivian the best, and then Adeline.

I was also going to vote Vivian even before reading your explanations.

I've also always liked the name Miriam- ever since I was young. I prefer the traditional spelling though.

I voted for Myriam (or Miriam) and Adeline. My favorite is definitely Miriam, though, as it's also a strong contender on my list (though my DH doesn't like it!). The meaning is beautiful, the name itself classic and lovely, and the nicknames very sweet.

Another lover of name threads! Yay!

I think I prefer the English feminine spelling Vivien, but we wanted to preserve the -Ian connection...it's a family name. Dh is also a stickler for keeping the most "normal" spellings (/). Vivienne we wanted to avoid because of the Angelina Jolie connection, and because it's pronounced slightly differently. Plus with the names of our children, and our last name (which is Irish), a French spelling doesn't fit as well as an English one does.

That is adorable.

We like classic names. Dh is more name-conservative than I am (an earlier list had a few more unusual names on it and was much longer).

I love old names with great meanings, names that aren't crazy-unheard of, but also aren't in the flock of popular names these days. I don't really care for word names, or cre8tive names much...though dd's name is incredibly rare, and was more popular back in the era of Jane Austen. Our sons' names are short, basic, classic...top 50 in popularity.

With this daughter, I was hoping to pick one of the names I'd been too chicken to pick before (something known but a little more adventurous), but those early dreams of Vivian, along with the meaning, make dh and I feel like perhaps "she's" chosen her name already?? It's hard to argue with that--though we might like the sounds or meanings of other names, we've never had a name seem so chosen before. While I love the meaning, and that these dreams had so much meaning/symbolism for our family, part of me is like "Hey, wait a minute! I wanted to pick the name!"

We'd like to have four or five names picked, then name her when she's born. I just love name threads, and the ideas and associations people put out here, so I was wondering what others thought of the names we're drawn to...

Thanks Wendy! (Though I think you might have a bias toward little girls with V names! )

I like Miriam and Vivian best. The meanings and the names are lovely.

I love Vivian the best, second choice is Adeline
post #15 of 29
Favorites here are Vivian & Miriam (I'd lean toward Vivian with a family connection to that, and yipes - the dreams too, but I go for that kind of stuff myself.) That said, we have our own Imogen here and it's a lovely name too (unexpected possible nickname - mogo, dd came up with that herself at 1 1/2).
I picked Vivan, Adeline, and Miriam. The middle name James goes excellent with any of these names. I really like Vivan James though. Good Luck
post #17 of 29
they're all great names, but i would personally avoid vivian, imogen and adeline because they're getting so wildly popular.

i think Aurelia is really pretty.

I guess I haven't taken a close look at popularities...these all seem like relatively rare (but known) names in our area.

Vivian: last three years 210, 207, 164
Imogen: no chart, still isn't in the top 1000
Ingrid: last three years 636, 545, 798
Aurelia: Not ranked in the top 1000 for the last 60 years
Corinne: last three years: 679, 841, 757
Adeline: last three years: 388, 361, 351 (though there are lots of other Addy's, Addisons, etc....something to consider)
Miriam: last three years 303, 309, 310

lotusma, are you outside the US?

Imogen is pretty popular abroad. Vivian looks like it's especially popular in NYC and DC, though not in the top 100 even there. Adeline......yeah. With all the Addisons, cre8tive Ad- names, and Adelaides it's probably getting very popular. Though we'd call her by her whole name or Adele, which is not popular at all.

I love Vivian. I like Corinne.

I like Miriam but spelled like Miriam, not the "y" spelling.

ROM, i haven't come across any kids personally w/ those names, my observation is based on what i've seen creeping onto the scene here and elsewhere online. i see quite an explosive trend.

(and that includes my LO's name, Jude. :/)
