the Chocolate Milk Diet????

So they're recommending drinking milk. Okay, I'll buy that, although I'd say go for whole milk for the fats that keep you sated and prevent cravings. But why CHOCOLATE? All of the "benefits" they're citing apply to the milk, not the chocolate. I have no argument with chocolate if it's REAL chocolate, but most chocolate milk is a cocktail of artificial flavors and colors and processed sweeteners.

For starters, any benefits of cow's milk can be found elsewhere in a well-balanced diet. Secondly, most of the world can't even drink cow's milk. I don't remember the exact percentages, but nearly all native americans and asians cannot. Only those of northern European descent are able to... and even then, it's not all of them. Much of the rest of the world cannot. Add chocolate, by which they probably mean the artificially flavored chemical concoction called "chocolate syrup", I can't see *any* health benefits from this. It's a fluff article, drawing people in with that ubiquitous "DIET" word, and it ,most definitely shouldn't be taken seriously, IMO. Geesh... the things that pass for "news" these days.

I think it is an advertising scam by the milk and chocolate milk powder industries.
However, my youngest dd does drink a glass of chocolate milk every morning.

Chocolate milk = candy in this house.

Heavy cream with a bit of really dark chocolate melted in? Much healthier choice imho!

I see a ton of people at the gym guzzling chocolate milk and touting it as the perfect recovery drink. Advertising at it's finest.

I believe the number is about 70% of the population cannot properly digest milk. Whether or not they drink it anyways is another matter.

It's not an allergy, it's the inability to break down the sugar lactose. Most adults in the world do not continue to make the enzyme lactase into adulthood; the people who do generally descend from a very few herding cultures, like the British or Nordic people for instance. These are people who lived in places with cool springs and falls and cold winters, where fresh milk would have a chance at keeping more than a few hours. Liquid milk was regularly consumed only by nursing children, and thus adults gradually lost or never developed the the ability to continue to digest lactose into adulthood.

Most people who are lactose-intolerant, however, can eat aged cheeses and properly fermented milk like yogurt or kefir. Those foods were commonly used in a much wider area of the world, because they keep longer. They contain very little or no lactose, and are thus digestible even if one lacks the lactase.

FWIW, true milk protein allergy is something else entirely, and is not as common. It is an allergy to the protein casein.

Wow! That is amazingly ignorant! How about just plain milk?

On milk intolerance: Pasteurised milk is also much less digestible than raw. Many people can tolerate the latter, not the former.

That's for lactose intolerance (raw easier to digest than pasteurized, because the lactose is predigested, I think it is), I believe. For a milk intolerance, all milk is usually a problem.
