I have an appt to have impacted lower wisdom teeth removed in 2 days. The office called today and now there are multiple problems. I made this appt over a month ago and they called 2 days before appt to tell me that:

1) They have known all this time I am nursing and now they decided they refuse to even attempt safe medications-they will use what they want and I have to stop BF for 24 hours.

2) I made arrangements for my BIL to drop me off and pick me up and watch my kids. They refuse to do the procedure unless I have someone watch the kids out of the office-they're not allowed in there AND someone must stay with me during the entire procedure. I have been laid off and we can't risk DHs job. He has already had to take lots of time off when we had DD.

They have had all this time to give me this info and they waited until now. I am freaking out because I need to have these teeth out-they are causing frequent infections that are very painful. To start all over with a new oral surgeon will push back the procedure by 2+ months as I will have to start all over with the eval ect. I don't know what to do.

I don't want to stop BF for 24 hours but if I keep waiting I keep getting infections and having to take antibiotics. I don't want to keep nursing repeatedly while on the antibiotics but I fear that stopping BF for 24 hours will be a problem. WWYD?

Pumping/dumping for 24 hrs is not all that long in the grand scheme of things. IMO Constant pain and infections could cause longer lasting problem down the road. Have them tell you exactly what medications they used, then double check after the fact. Enlist the help of your BIL to help you get the information you need before you leave. You may not need to wait the full 24 hrs (you'll know when the meds start to wear off).

When you get there, give them the cell phone# of your BIL and DH. Ask BIL to wait in the waiting room for 15-30 minutes, then just leave with kids until he is called to pick you up (or return at a set time). Don't ask for permission, just do.

I have never seen any dental/medical office actually evict kids from the waiting room once they were there.

what in the world are they using for your pain that is not compatible? it sounds like (from kelly mom) that you would be just fine with whatever they give you.

i would see if you can find a second friend to be with you while you are in surgery. that way BIL can drop you off, you can top off the baby at that time, leave a bottle of BM with him. have the other friend go in with you then have bil come pick you up. so the only thing you really need is a second friend to go with you.

I dont know of any meds for dental work are not compatible w/nursing.

I am guessing here but after researching the commonly used meds I think they may be planning on using a reversal drug instead of allowing me to wake up on my own. They are telling me that I will be released in less then an hour and the reversal drugs have never been studied from what info I can find. This is just an assumption though, I don't know if I would wake up naturally in that short a time or not.

this sounds like a case of "cya" to me. me, i'd get the teeth removed and nurse as usual.

I had my wisdom teeth removed when DD was 15 months old. I was able to nurse her when I woke up from the surgery.

i just had a difficult extraction requiring lots of numbing and i nursed my 7 1/2 mo as usual. i took lortab for pain afterwards, but only took it minimally. good luck!

Update

I had the surgery today and I feel so relieved! It turns out that the several people I spoke with over the phone were just receptionists with no medical training or knowledge of breastfeeding. The anesthesiologist was actually formerly a pediatrician and much more caring and knowledgeable. He was rather upset that no one ever spoke to him about my concerns or asked him to call me. He took the time to explain in detail how the medications will work, how fast they will be mostly out of my system(30 minutes or less), and that they use the same medications in infants with no problems. He also apologized for the behavior of his staff, admitted they were just trying to CYA, and said he wished "more people would realize breastmilk does not come from a faucet that can be turned off and on at will". He was AWESOME.
