1 month old not sleeping during day

So, up until yesterday LO was sleeping well during hte day, some 1 hour stretches, some 3 hour stretches. Sometimes in the wrap or sling, sometimes in the swing. He always needed help to fall asleep, though.
As of yesterday he won't sleep during the day. He is clearly tired, and starts to fall asleep, and sometimes startles awake, sometimes just wakes up. He's calm for a lot of the time, but then gets cranky. I know he needs more sleep than this. Nursing to sleep sometimes works, but then he doesn't stay asleep for more than 10-15 minutes.

I took him for a walk in the Moby today. He slept while we were walking, (maybe 30 min) but as soon as we got home (before I stopped walking, but after we entered the house) he woke up.

This can't be healthy. Not to mention it's driving me crazy!

It's only been a couple of days. Don't worry, DD did this a couple times, but they were just random periods, then she'd go back no good naps.

I know what you're going through. My baby slept for the first month and then.....Ever since those 3 wonderful weeks she has been sleeping 30 minutes at a time. She is now 4 months old and will sleep 1 hour or 2 if I keep her on me otherwise it's just cat naps. I don't have much advise, but you are not alone.

My LO did this a couple of times at 1 month old too, and then went back to the random regular naps throughout the day. I wouldn't worry too much unless it lasts longer than a few days.

I agree about using a carrier to get in longer naps if possible, too. Our Moby and stroller (with carseat) are godsends!

My dd was the same way...She was just so overtired by 7:00 pm that she would cry for hours. Her naps were a very light sleep--anything would wake her up. I tried rocking, white noise, car rides, walking in the stroller...as soon as any of that stopped, she'd wake up (even at a red light, she'd start screaming)

During that 4 month period I developed terrible insomnia myself...it lasted for years. I finally traced it to excess copper levels. When I stopped taking my multivitiamin my insomnia got much better. I read that copper in breast milk can cause sleep problems and I attribute her insomnia to the copper in the prenatal vitamins I was still taking while breast feeding. Could that be an issue for you?

Good luck!

Thanks, everyone for your encouraging responses. Today I let him nurse until he seemed to really fall asleep and he's been asleep for about an hour now. In the past I have unlatched him, and still held him, a bit earlier. So either this was just a 2-day issue, or he just needs me to let him stay on the boob longer. If I let him stay on as long as he would on his own, he'd be on there for an hour (after finishing eating). I don't mind when I'm at home (usually), but this gets difficult if we're out and about and I know he needs to sleep.
Kids are such a learning curve!!
Hopefully this trend continues.

Oh, on a side note, he's been having "night" terrors during the day. I read that this can be caused by disrupted sleep schedules, so I'll be interested to see if they go away if I can get him back to sleeping regularly.
