We're going to be taking a large number of plane rides this summer, and we generally don't check bags. Some of the trips may be easier if we could take small amounts of certain foods with us (sourdough starter, kefir grains, coconut oil) that just wouldn't be provided where we are going. The trick is that we have to put it all in containers less than or equal to 3 fluid oz (or 100 ml). Does anybody know of good food-safe, water tight, travel sized containers?

I'm thinking that with the items you want to carry, you may want to avoid alot of temperature fluctuation - in which case Thermos food jars are great. BUt I don't think they come that small!
I just came across greentainers - not sure if they are watertight.

We just flew with only carry-on bags. Some foods can be packed as is with no regulations on size. It was challenging to find details online on which foods were officially okay and which were not. We ended up spreading peanut butter on bread at home and sticking those in containers for the flight. We got some jam in those single serving squares and put those in our quart-size baggies (one per ticketed person). We had all food in one person's quart-size baggie; all toiletries in another person's; and all "go bag" items in the third person's baggie (sunscreen packets, lip balm, etc) since we arrived mid-day and had hours to explore before checking into our hotel.
We used some of those plastic condiment cups with lids, too. (Snag a few each time you go to certain restaurants or just buy a package at the food supply store.) We happened to already have 1 oz cups/lids, which tend to work better anyway because more will fit into that quart-size baggie than equal quantity of 3 oz sized items. (Three one-ounce containers fit easier than one three-ounce, for example, but it really became more important when trying to get 9 ounces into one quart-size baggie.) I brought extra empty containers in the carry-on bags for new items we found along the way. (We couldn't always wash them out and we had four flights--two were back-to-back and we had to go through security twice in one day with hours in between.)
Some items were just not feasible to bring and we let it go for this relatively short period of time in our lives. Just saying...
