Beach theme for 4 yo b-day

Hi all - my friend's DS is having his fourth birthday this weekend - it's a picnic at their home, with a beach theme. They're trying to come up with fun beach-themed party ideas (games, decor, what-not). Any suggestions? I'm pretty much crap at party planning, but I wanted to help out.

I saw cute party stuff at the Dollar Tree. It looked like it was for a Luau - but beachy to me as there were pineapples, coconut, leis, and other Hawaiian stuff.

They also had beach balls and other summery items. For $1 a piece, it wouldn't be much to decorate. I'd throw out some towels, maybe have kids wear swimsuits, and cook on he grill.

That sounds good. Not sure where you live but you could put shells on the table as a decoration ( you can get shells at craft shops here in Australia but not sure elsewhere) and if you can find them split coconuts in half and use as a drink containers with tropical punch with a straw and umbrella.

you could put up a beach umbrella and a net with plastic fish and other sea creatures caught in it.

And get the kids to wear thongs (flip flops).

and serve ice creams in cones or iceblocks.

Beach is easy. at least for four year olds. Blow up a bunch of beach balls and let them kick them throw them and whatever. Have a sand box with sea shells in it. a kid pool with some boats in it. for crafts you could make picture frames where you glue small shells on it. Or sand art. You could decorate foam visors(available at places like hobby lobby for cheap) with stickers and markers.

Favors could be any sort of beach themed stickers, any candy, a beach ball (from earlier in the festivities), a foam visors, a sea shell, maybe a bracelet with some sea glass beads in it.

Fishing net game: chose 4 -6 players to be the fish, send the fish away for a few moments. The rest of the players choose a number, between 1 and 20 is good. Now the players form a circle holding hands. Everyone lifts their hands to make arches. Now call back the fish, they run in and out of the circle while the other players count. When the chosen number is reached they drop their hands and see how many fish they caught. Repeat with new fish.

Boat races: use plastic trays to make boats. Add sails made form paper and drinking straws. The players must use a drinking straw to try and blow their boat across the sea. A baby bath tub or under-bed box makes a good sea.

Beach theme always makes me think of volley ball. We use a big beach ball and a rope since we don't have a net.
